Handelstedet ble etablert for fiskeri og handelsaktiviteter. Stedet hadde stor betydning for lokal økonomi og var et viktig knutepunkt for handel som tørrfisk og andre varer I tillegg var dette et sosial samlingspunkt der folk kunne møtes, handle, spise eller ta en fest!
