Wat je gaat doen
A 5-hr summer activity at the village of Kormakitis (or Korucam), located a short drive from Nicosia or Kyrenia. You will learn about carobs (naturally sweet fruit, used as a healthy alternative to chocolate) and experience sustainable carob-picking practices, along with a traditional home-made meal. We'll pick you up from Kormakitis' centre at start time, and drive to the fields (approx. 10'), with a light chat on the political-economic-historical background of Cyprus and the importance of carob trees. In the fields, we'll meet my mum and once ready we’ll set up the family’s specialist equipment for carob-picking. We’ll learn about and pick carobs for 2-3 hours in the traditional and sustainable way. We'll have a traditional meal in the field, usually consisting of a main dish and local tapas, and you'll have the opportunity to taste carob-based products. You can take with you up to one small bag of the carobs you've picked if you wish to, and we are happy to provide local recipes! We'll head back to the village shortly after dinner, where you can enjoy a short walking tour around the village (including my grandparents' traditional house) or alternatively enjoy local coffee-shops. The experience will end at our original meeting point. In case you'd like to participate on different dates/times, don't hesitate to contact us to adjust availability. Can't wait to meet you!

I am an early-career scientist (geographer) interested in environmental conservation and sustainability. Coming from Cyprus, with roots from Kormakitis village, I've lived and studied in the UK and US and got inspired from my travels. Efforts for the survival and preservation of olive and carob trees began 3 years ago in family land passed down to my mum over the last 200 years. My mum, Ziannet (https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/272393178) is a local expert, economist in profession, who has managed her land for years, and is interested in ecotourism and sustainable practices. The initiative Olives&Carobs was recently created by my mum and I, in hopes to revitalise the trees and raise awareness about their high natural, nutritional and economic value, whilst pursuing a positive impact in the community of Kormakitis and beyond.

Waar je zult zijn
We'll spend most of our time in 200-year old family land nearby Kormakitis’ (Korucam) centre for carob-picking. My ancestors lived off the land until 1974, after when carob/olive-picking halted for a few years due to unfavourable political/economic conditions in the village. Kormakitis is inhabited by Cypriot Maronites (Catholics) for the past 900 years, including my grandparents, whose traditional house we can visit after the fields.
