Wat je gaat doen

Learn about life, death, demographics, and geographical expansion in early Los Angeles as we explore the history of the city's earliest efforts to dispose of the dead. Los Angeles in the 19th century was a Wild West town filled with illness, violence, and mystery. From the start, city and church officials were never able to keep up with the city's population, living or dead. You'll participate in a discussion of burial practices, explore the stories of those interred therein, and learn about the vital role these areas played as city parks. You'll also hear how the perception of cemeteries transitioned from a source of public pride to a form of public nuisance, including the city's slapdash efforts to disinter the bodies of thousands of pioneering Angelenos in the name of progress.

Hadley is a superior guide. She comes prepared and is knowledgeable. She walks easily which is a must for many of us older folk! I’ve gone on events with her as a guide before…she is warm, gentle and caring. I highly recommend any events of which she is the guide.

Our group of four thoroughly enjoyed the tour with Hadley. The walk was a comfortable distance from Olvera Street through Chinatown with lots to see, and Hadley was a knowledgeable and engaging guide. In addition to the necessary facts and dates, she held our interest with vivid anecdotes about the people who had been buried in the cemeteries, as well how and why they were dug up and moved as the city grew. All of us are history and cemetery buffs, so we happily exchanged tales. It was great to hear Hadley's stories of the earliest burials in Los Angeles. I've already recommended her tour to a couple of friends.

Hadley, and the experiences she hosts, are truly informative and fun. Lost and Long-Gone Graveyards of LA was an exceptional experience. If you love LA or are just interested in how Los Angeles coped with the growing from nothing to becoming part of the United States and its exponential growth afterwards, this is an important tour. While she is loaded with details and dates, Hadley's candor and articulation make her tours interesting and easy to follow. Of all the Atlas Obscura events I've attended (this was my 7th), Lost and Long-Gone Graveyards of LA was my family's favorite.

Really enjoyed the experience — the tour was really well researched and goes into an era of early Los Angeles history that I knew almost nothing about.

Hadley is energetic and passionate. You could totally tell that she loves what she does. She has a wonderful way of delivering the dirty truth in a compelling and delightfully gross way. Would recommend her tours 100%.

Learn about Los Angeles' first cemeteries. Led by a great historian who will weave stories from the 1870s and 1920s into a very in-depth experience of how death was treated during the time of Olivera street.
