Wat je gaat doen

A 2.5 hr walking and food tasting tour of colourful and vibrant Little India. The street names pretty much reflect the history. Race Course Road was once a horse racing hub that was popular during the mid 1800 by the early colonial settlers. Buffalo Road and Kerbau Road (Kerbau is buffalo in Malay) show the area was once a thriving cattle rearing area. And Belilios Lane is named after a cattle importer I.R. Belilios.

The main street in Little India is a long stretch of Serangoon Road, one of the oldest roads in Singapore, dating back to 1822. The first Indians to arrive in Singapore were a laskar or an army unit of Indian soldiers of the Bengal Infantry who accompanied Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819.

We will walk around the conserved shophouses, smell the spices, the stringed jasmine flowers, the sweet snacks of ladoo, see colourful saris, the markets. How about have your hand dyed in henna? Or fancy walking around Mustafa Centre?

Hungry? How about tasting some delicous Indian dish? Perhaps biryani, thosai, chappati or the simple all-time local favourite roti prata.

This walking tour is a mix of culture and sampling of some typical Indian dishes.

Rara is great. The little India tour gives you a different view of Singapore. It feels more of a picture of the daily lives of many of the inhabitants of this great city.

This area of Singapore is really interesting and definitely worth a few hours wandering around. Rara was a good guide to get orientated and understand the basic geography of the place. She was friendly and easy to get along with. I gained a general understanding of the neighbourhood which was great, but I think the tour could be improved with more specific insights / historical knowledge that would have really brought it to life for me.

This was a great tour through Little India section of Singapore. I was fascinated by the Indian diaspora and how they assimilated in Singapore. Expect to see saree shops, temples, tea stands, barbers and plenty of restaurants. We stopped for jack fruit from a fruit stand and we had dosas and chai at Komala Vilas. This was the place that president Modi ate at when he was here in Singapore. For non Indians expect an explosion of colors, tastes and smells. For Indians, expect to be transported into a world of buffalo ranches, racetracks and stories of immigrants who left India for economic advantage. Rara was the perfect guide as she has the perspective of how the neighborhood has changed from the eyes of a native. This afternoon tour was a rich experience.
