Simply a great experience. Showzi sensei spoke in details about the history of kintsugi and his study of maki-e, which was very interesting and educational. His passion for kintsugi was evident when he showed us some of his work, as well as his knowledge. The highlight of the course was when he performed the tea ceremony and explained to us how kintsugi related to it. A truly once in a lifetime experience to learn from a master.

This is very special. You get a history lesson, many cultural references, incredible hospitality, and an introduction to an art form uniquely Japanese and more uniquely elevated by Showzi. You won’t be a master after this experience, but you will be able to know the “true” kintsugi and appreciate it.

I would like to express how thought out the way showzi planned and organized this experience. Kinstugi usually take several weeks to complete from start to finish but showzi managed to find an ingenious way to fast track it in two days, without losing any steps for his students to experience each and every step of the making process. After each day's work we all get to sit down and enjoy his made tea and Natsuyo, his wife's homemade meal. It was simply delightful to have this homestyle Japanese hangout moment. FYI, you have to pay attention to his tea making skill, the aha moment of 'oh that's how to mix the tea to perfection'. What a graceful moment. We also have a chance after each day to dig into his knowledge and experience as an artist and his craftsmanship. His knowledge of the theory behind the crafts and history of the arts are impeccable. You can see that he is truly passionate about what he does, and that is infectious. As a craftsman/maker I am just inspired by being around him and listening to his stories, which is well translated by the wonderful Yumi. I will also hold this experience close to my heart. And, I am looking forward to taking his master class that takes you in a more in-depth exploration of the making process. Its an open secret that I want to become his apprentice hehehe. 😊

This was a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so happy that I attended the workshop with an intimate group & setting. The sensei is so passionate about his art and I’m excited to return to his master class when I revisit Tokyo!

Spending two afternoons diving into the world of kintsugi with Showzi was a trip highlight - we not only learned about the traditions and techniques behind a historically significant art form, but we also got to experience it firsthand from a true artist. Highly recommend this experience for anyone who wants a deeper cultural experience in Tokyo.

The workshop is very well structured. It is a quick overview of what kintsugi really is so we leave the experience with an idea of the whole process and the certainty of one’s need of mastering it for years ahead, if that’s the goal. It’s important to know that after these two days we are still not able to replicate it by ourselves. And also that it seems to be difficult finding all the materials to develop the technique. The tea cerimony that is held during the class is an interesting experience as well. Totally worth it.
