Wat je gaat doen

This tour consists of a pleasant walk around the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed and covered in ashes by the VESUVIUS in 79 AD.
During the famous eruption, Pompeii and its inhabitants were buried by tons of pumice and volcanic ashes, which preserved many things and materials in amazing conditions.
The tour starts here, and after it you'll have time to grab some lunch or to stroll on the souvenirs' shops outside the ruins.
Then I'll provide you with the Circumvesuviana train tickets and we will catch it in order to get to Herculaneum (20 mins trip circa) and start our walk in the ruins.
Herculaneum is much smaller, but even better preserved than Pompeii. While Pompeii had been covered in four meters of ashes, an avalanche of 20-meters-thick mud had buried Herculaneum. Two-floor buildings, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings and mosaics are still observable there. The site gives a vivid impression of the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the wealthier citizens of the Roman Empire!
Our walk ends in Herculaneum.

The tour is in ENGLISH or in Italian, only for a SMALL GROUP (15 people maximum).

Hello everyone! I'm Sergio. I was born and raised in POMPEII, under the shade of Mount VESUVIUS.
I graduated in ARCHAEOLOGY and then in HISTORY! I am a professional licensed tourist guide and a big, passionate fan of archaeology and of the places I happen to live in: they are pure magic. Since I was a child, I've always had a great delight in reading history books. I also love VISUAL ARTS and I enjoy very much drawing ancient monuments. I am thrilled to travel; I love photography and I like to create photo art. Music is an essential part of my life: in fact, I play the keyboard in a rock band ;)
It's a pleasure for me to offer you my skills, shall you want to explore Pompeii and/or Herculaneum.
I really can't wait to meet you!

Waar je naartoe gaat

I'll meet you at Porta Marina Superiore holding a sign with "Askos Tours Explore Pompeii & Herculaneum" on top. We'll visit the west area of Pompei for about 2 hours; we'll then move to Herculaneum using the local train: here we'll spend two more hours. A walk in these famous ruins is a very intense experience: you'll have the feeling of wandering in towns that are still alive! All of the major highlights of the 2 sites wilI be covered!

We had a fantastic tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum with Michele. Not only was he incredibly knowledgable of his subject, and guided the group around the highlights of both locations, but he added a personal touch. As there were very few people booked on the tour he gave us a lift in his car to Herculaneum and then to the train station afterwards. We got so much more out of the day than we would have been trying to do it ourselves. Thanks so much!

Michele was the guide and he was extremely knowledgable and approachable. There was a lot of ground to cover, both physically and factually. That could be tiring to some. But if you've come half-way around the world for this, and you want the full experience, then the commitment of time and energy is more than rewarded. And without a knowledgable guide, I would not have appreciated and absorbed as much as I did with Michele. I suggest visiting both Pompeii and Herculaneum on one day to see the excavated buildings and evidence of the everyday lives of the ordinary and the powerful citizens, especially in those last fateful hours. With that context in hand, I suggest visiting the National Archaeological Museum in Napoli on another day--which we did with another guide from Askos Tours, Rossana, who was equally knowledgable. The museum's massive Roman, Etruscan, and Egyptian art collection is reason enough to visit but the best-preserved Pompeii and Herculaneum tile work, and objects of art, culture, and commerce are in the Napoli museum, safeguarded from the sticky fingers of millions of visitors to the ruins. When booking Napoli museum tickets online be sure to add-on the extra cost of slip-on shoe covers to be admitted to the special floor tile collection under your feet. Altogether, an extraordinary experience.

10/10, really felt like we had insider knowledge during this experience. We didn’t have our tour with Sergio personally, which we were initially a little disappointed with as we had booked based on him being recommended so highly HOWEVER we were not disappointed. Our guide Diego was fantastic, he too is an extremely passionate and knowledgeable archaeologist who had personal insight of Pompei having worked there previously. He really made elements of living 2000 years ago come to life with his expert story telling and descriptions on how life would have been. We had a 2nd tour over @ Herculaneum again with Diego where he just as easily pointed out elements of interest whilst explaining the rich history / differences & similarities between the 2 cities. When ever he showed us something in 1 area he would then draw the connection to it in another area which I personally loved as it helped form a more rounded understanding of the experience and how the 2 elements were linked! (Not to mention he didn’t leave us stranded - and very kindly dropped us @ the station home!) Very pleased with our day out exploring!

Money well spent!! I booked this tour last minute, the night before, and I was really blown away by all of Sergio’s knowledge. He is an archaeologist and has personal experience excavating the ruins we were exploring. This gave him a great advantage and he was able to tell us about his personal experiences and the artifacts that have been found. What he knee can’t be found in books, personal stories are priceless. He was patient and thorough and I never felt rushed as we lagged behind to take pictures. It was great to see Herculaneum as well. I’ve been to Pompei before and never heard about this spot, so definitely check it out! Sergio was personable, professional, and patient. Super important for a tour guide. It was hot AF so bring plenty of water, if possible frozen overnight so you can stay hydrated. Also bring s small towel so you can wet your neck and face and a small umbrella because that heat is awful.

Diego was our guide on the tour and he was really excellent, passionate and knowledgeable about Pompei and Ercolano. His passionate stories about the explosion of the Vesuvius, daily life in the Etruscan, Greek and off course Roman times and the excavations brought the old stones, carbonised wood, fresco’s and so much more back to life. Also, he helped us with getting from the site in Pompei to Ercolano which was very much appreciated! Maybe important info for some future visitors but the activity in my opinion was also covid-era adapted and felt very safe. Congrats to the team!
