Wat je gaat doen

Shitennoji temple Flea market: Kind of a hidden flea market to foreign tourists, the visitors are mostly local people. The language you can hear is Osaka dialect, not standard Japanese, because of a deep Osaka Area.

Tour itinerary:
10:30 Shitennoji-mae yuhigaoka St.→Flea market at Shitennoji Temple (Lunch at the temple restaurant. Japanese food menu only) → Isshinji temple Theater to see Buddhism art → Climbing Mt. Chausu → Going through Tennoji park to Zoo Shop around 14:30 ~ 15:00, the end of service.

You will meet a strange things you've never met before because the place you are visiting is Japan. Participants really know about their merchandise. They would be happy to teach you how to use it, how they made it or what kind of history the merchandise have. From this moment communication is started with you and participants. And you share it with other guests who join this experience. And then we can make friends like we've already known each other.
"Communication" and "Share something with someone" are the key words for this experience. To do it, I will give you some helps with Japanese to local people through the experience

I love flea markets. I've opened up a store as a participant and strolled around as a customer in book & handmade crafts flea markets. It's been about 4 years. I enjoyed both sides because I could have a good communication with many kinds of people. Even now I've been in touch with some of them.

I like hearing an episode related with a merchandise from people I meet there. They talk about family, hometown, dream and etc. Priceless time.
I would like you to have the same experience in this flea markets. To do so, you might need some Japanese. I will make a bridge between you and participants.

It was meant to rain the day we went so there weren’t many vendors but Susie still showed us around and we got to enjoy the food as well as the things me and my sisters were interested in. Susie was very attentive to our very different interests and we learned a lot from exchanging stories. She even accompanied us on our way out from the flea market to go partway to another local event. Very accommodating and I’d love to meet up again if the future allows. Thank you for the wonderful time, Susie.

It was such a joy spending time with Setsuko! As we walk through the temple, she explained the meaning of the gates and traditional cemetery. There were many interesting things to see and buy at the flee market. She showed me some cool uniquely Japanese items and how they were used. You will also pass a bunch of delicious food stalls! We decided to eat snacks and food from the stalls for our lunch break. Once you leave the flee market, you will go on a peaceful walk before ending the tour. Definitely ask her about daily life in Japan. The tour was great and Setsuko was ver kind and patience. I will definitely do this experience again the next time I come back 😊

Although I live in Japan, I took this experience for the benefit of a local bi-lingual guide. Not one person at the Temple spoke English, save Setsuko-san (Susie), so from a value-for-money point of view, it's a lot cheaper than paying for a professional interpreter and a lot easier to organise. But of course, that's not all of it. Setsuko-san knows this Temple well, and so she could translate any information boards I was interested in - that are only in Japanese. For example, I'd gone to Shitennoji previously but I had not understood the significance of a large flat stone that was venerated. Our guide explained that this stone had lain beneath the feet of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims on the famous Kumano Kodo pilgrim's path, and it had been carried to Osaka as a sacred link to Shittenoji temple to the paths in Wakayama Prefecture. Another advantage of a local guide, is that vendors are more friendly with a Japanese interlocutor and you're more likely to get a good price a nice smile, and a bit of a back-story, which is what it's all about. A third point is that you can basically ask you guide whatever you like ! So, you never come away disappointed. I was SO happy to find a really great konyaku vendor, and thanks to Setsuko-san, apart from just tasting it, we could learn a little more about the life of the vendor, who is an itinerant sole-trader relying on Temple and Shrine-based feast days to set up his stall. Some of his raw ingredients come as far away as Gifu Prefecture. This is just an example of what you can learn if you're interested enough. THANK YOU SETSUKO-SAN for all your patience, answering all my questions and requests and for helping me to buy a really beautiful (sacred) art piece today. I am so grateful to you.
