Wat je gaat doen

We’ll show you a garden where growing food is less work than a vegetable patch, that’s better for biodiversity and more beautiful to boot. Welcome to the wildlife and edible forest garden tour! It’s in an idyllic location atop a wooded Ceredigion valley, with views of the Preseli hills in Pembrokeshire.

On the tour, we look at the multi-layered and no-dig approach and how the garden can provide it’s own fertiliser, mulch and pest control. By letting nature do the heavy-lifting, the productive garden is lower maintenance whilst being better for climate change and biological diversity.

Using your situations, we discuss applying the principles to any sized garden, whatever your experience. We briefly cover surveying techniques and show a simple plan, then examine the core design elements of how people will use the space and how to space the trees: looking at structures, utilities, propagation and paths.

Finally, we’ll show you how to establish a forest garden: building propagation beds, planting windbreaks and trees, preparing the ground, planting the shrubs and creating the ground cover. Along the way, design decisions and planting combinations are highlighted.

I am passionate about forest gardening, moving to Wales with my family in 2015 to plant a forest garden and founding Forest Garden Wales to promote its practise. It’s a productive, sustainable, wildlife-friendly and low maintenance way of gardening. I’ve attended Martin Crawford’s Forest Garden Design Course at the Agroforestry Research Trust as well as grafting, planting and pruning workshops run by The People’s Orchard. I hosted monthly forest garden tours in the 2018 season, and I give forest garden talks to gardening clubs.

Waar je naartoe gaat

The tour takes place in our original forest garden, with stunning views across the wooded valley. At break time, there will be tea and coffee served next to the beautiful Welsh farmhouse. If there is time, we can pay a visit to the adjacent new forest garden and coppice. Please note, some of the land is uneven and on a slope and you will need to wear suitable footwear.

This experience was great. Jake answered all our questions and his knowledge on forest gardens is impressive. He is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject matter. We would definitely recommend it for anyone who is interested in forest gardening or permaculture in general. We left with plenty of ideas for our allotment and the dream of one day having a project as exciting as Jake's.

I spontaneously booked the tour on a Sunday evening planning to go the next day on the Monday. I live in the Midlands in Worcestershire so I had to drive about two and a half hours to get to Jake’s garden. It was well worth the drive. Luckily the weather held up and it was a brilliant way to spend an afternoon. It was a little tricky to find so I would recommend to anyone going to screen shot the directions from the website on to their phone or device and put Jake’s number in your phone *before* you set off. Otherwise, if you do get lost, there isn’t any internet signal to get hold of the information you need. Once I had called Jake he stood by his gate, flagged me down and helped me park too. He was very welcoming and being as I was about fifteen minutes late, he added that time on to the tour so I still got the full two-hour experience. Currently, my garden is ‘theoretical’, being as I plan to get an allotment in the coming months but don’t have any garden space right now. Jake didn’t make me feel silly; in fact, he was really encouraging about it. He gave me ideas on how to start it all off in a practical and pragmatic way, by mixing annuals with perennials as the garden got established. Perennials for the long-term forest garden and annuals to get something cropping shorter term. He had really good knowledge of the different plant species and my note book is now full of plants to buy. He also tailored his advice to my garden as he said that although Sea Buckthorn trees worked well in his garden, they might well take over a smaller space. Jake’s passion for gardening really shines through and he’s a brilliant champion of Forest Gardening. I felt comfortable enough to ask any question and he answered all of my questions with enthusiasm and detail.

Brilliant tour. I arrived a little late as missed the turning, but Jake still offered a warm welcome, made some coffee and asked me a few questions about my interest in forest gardening. This helped him tailor the information about the forest garden as we walked around. I have learned so much and delighted with the experience. Superb host/tour guide/educator and would highly recommend this - even in wet weather!

We had an interesting and informative morning with Jake. Not knowing much about forest gardens before we learnt a lot and, inspired by Jake's enthusiasm we are looking forward to being able to start our own !

Booked this experience for my partner and he loved it. He said he learned loads and Jake was a great host and was really knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Although we'd read all about Forest Gardens, it made such a difference to see a working one and it really helped to be able to ask lots of questions (and get lots of answers!) Jake took the time to understand our plans for own garden and tailored the content of the experience to suit. I would really recommend this course!
