Wat je gaat doen

This isn't your typical language lesson.. far from it! Let's make this a truly authentic Québecois experience. First, we'll meet for a traditional poutine at a nearby 'Frites Alors' where you can indulge in our local delicacy while receiving a formal lesson on French-Canadian vernacular- with a special focus on blasphemy!

Using my experience as a language teacher, I'll offer insight on semantics (how concepts are expressed through words) and morphology (the study of words and what they mean). As a native French Canadian, I will teach you to pronounce and understand some our most popular and funniest Québécois expressions. This experience will allow you to view our culture from a different angle and better relate to why we speak the way we speak.

You’ll do fun oral exercises and go home with a document highlighting Quebec lexicon that you can share with your friends. For example: 'en- titi' is an our way of saying "very" in Québécois. For example: "il est drôle EN TITI (he's VERY funny!). We'll focus on the antiquity of the language. For example: we still use the word "char" to mean car, which comes from when we used to travel in "chariots": the two-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle.

BIN LA!

I have specifically designed this experience for you because as a world traveler myself, this is exactly the kind of experience i'd seek to take in order to understand a foreign culture.

This experience was hands down my all time favorite thing to do. If you’re like me and Alissa that have a knack for linguistics and anthropology this is right down your alley. Alissa was able to convey information about the quebecois language very well and I learned a lot from her. When she was teaching me about the history of Quebec and the oppression against the French speakers years ago, we really related and were able to give each other an insight and share perspectives. Alissa is a very passionate person about this experience and has expanded the experience in the short 8 months its been out.

Alissa was super friendly and engaging. The session was informal, fun, and quite illuminating — a great way to begin learning about the distinct and unique québécois language while also learning about the region’s history. If you’re a metro French speaker but feel lost in Montreal this meetup is a great way to jump in and lean what you’ve been doing wrong while picking up some cheeky insights.

Very good gives great insight to why you may not be understanding the dialect here. Need to already be able to speak a certain level of French, as it’s more explanation of the difference in dialect not a conversation class.

It was difficult to actually schedule but totally worth our time and we're very glad we did it. Her focus was on understanding the socio-linguistic dynamics in québécois - We really appreciated having the social dynamics explained in a detailed thoughtful way. If you like knowing the "why" behind the way things are, you'll love this experience.

The experience goes beyond language. It's about history, society and the construction of an identity. I really could learn a lot from Alissa and this experience helped me to understand the city's organization, structure and culture. The host, Alissa, is so passionately prepared to share her own experiences I felt like I was having a conversation with a friend.
