We’ll walk around the “Jewish” sector of Mitte, recalling stories and visiting places related to the absence and presence of Jewish life in Berlin. We’ll see how the stories of Berlin’s Jews shape the present of the city and help to understand how Germany recreated itself after destroying one of its most important minorities.
This experience is not a passive lecture, so I invite you to participate imagining, talking and asking - all the why? and how? you feel asking -, so that you can take your own lessons and thoughts about the stories and interpretations I will share.

Hello! My name is Rafael, and I came to Berlin to finish a PhD about German-Jews and other historical minorities. I decided to stay. Here, my research became alive, not only a theoretical object, but a way of comprehending and experiencing the city.
I've been teaching, writing, lecturing and guiding about the stories of German speaking Jews for years. So I invite you to walk around Berlin and talk about how Jewish stories intertwine with the history of this city.

This was a very thought provoking and valuable experience learning about Jewish history specific to Berlin and Europe. We literally walked through history going to key points throughout the city. Rafael has a depth of knowledge on this subject and presented it in a very digestible and thought provoking way. This is a must do tour while in Berlin. Thank you Rafael.

Even though I was the only person signed up for the tour, Rafael went ahead and guided the tour just for me. He explained early on that the tour is a labour of love, and that showed throughout the tour. Rafael is deeply knowledgeable of both the history and geography of Jewish Berlin as well the academic theories of totalitarianism and open versus closed societies. The tour covered the old Jewish neighbourhood of Berlin, beginning with the first 50 families, through the beginnings of Reform Judaism, the explosion of the Jewish population in the 19th century and, of course, the gradual and then rapid persecution in the 1930s. While much of the original architecture and most of the streets and squared of 19th century Berlin have changed, Rafael does a good job using illustrations and public models and monuments to explain this change and it’s relation to Jewish history. I highly recommend the tour, which apparently is normally limited to four persons - another nod to the personal approach Rafael takes. We had a very good conversation, and he answered all my questions knowledgeably and thoughtfully.

Usually I’m a bit reluctant to do a guided tour. I get bored easily and most of the information passes me completely. Not this time.
Rafael tunes in on our own wishes and demands. This makes the tour interactive and lively. So I managed to stay captivated by Rafaels stories for over 4 hours. During that time we walked through Jewish Berlin and it felt as if we were back in time, as if we took part of the history.
Rafael is a very sociable, responsive and well educated person, it was a pleasure to meet hem.

Deep insight and adapted to our interests. Really nice bloke who got under the skin of the Jewish story of Berlin. Not a run of the mill tour & not something that you would just figure out by yourself.
He had great knowledge beyond his tour too & showed us Berlin in a unique fashion. Would certainly recommend.
