"Singing is twice praying"
This tour begins in Treme' the oldest African American neighborhood in the US. St. Augustine Church the first Black Catholic in the country, is a historic landmark of New Orleans. We meet on the side of the church by the "Tomb of the unknown slaves grave" on Governor Nicolls Street. This is also the congregation where Homer Plessy ( Plessy vs. Ferguson separate but equal) came from.
I know this church very well I was a Gospel soloist here for many years. Free people of color was unique during the antebellum period in the deep South, only in New Orleans did free people of color obtain land and privileges like education ect. Walking and talking we continue through Treme to Armstrong Park and Congo Square, we hear some of the rare stories stories about Louis Armstrong and other New Orleans music legends and traditions.
Last we enter the deep truth about slavery in Louisiana, we wont dwell but I will tell the truth and it ain't nothing nice, but it's important to know the past. At the tree of Life We sing and lift our Spirit up.
Heading out of the park, its time for refreshments something sweet & cool at my favorite coffee shop "Fatimas Cosy Corner.

Hi my name is Mikhala "Jazz Muffin" Iversen
I'm a Jazz vocalist and storyteller. I'm also the co- founder of the #1 Black Heritage & jazz tour in New Orleans. I love New Orleans: the good the bad and the ugly, I think all three stories are important to get the full picture of the memorizing Crescent City.
Music is deep in my blood generations of Jazz bread in my bones, and Jazz got me here, 10 years ago I came to sing, and was invited back I fell in love with New Orleans. Looking for the stories about the African slave-trade in Louisiana and the musical connection between Senegal and New Orleans, it was not that easy. Therefor I've created what I couldn't find, 5 star reviews only.

Mikhala gave us such a great time! She’s full of great insights, is really friendly, and deeply embodies the experience she’s representing. Full of truth, art, spirit, and heart. Would highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to hear a truthful and passionate portrayal of NOLA’s history.

This was magic. Do not hesitate. Book this. This was our first time to New Orleans for my husband and myself and we wanted to really experience the rich cultural heritage of the city. Mikhala really knows her stuff and it was amazing to not only hear about histories details but see them. She really illuminated the city and brought it to life for us sharing her knowledge and her beautiful voice. This was our first outing in New Orleans and the perfect start of our trip.

I can not recommend this experience enough! My 12-year-old daughter and I had the privilege of learning from Mikhala on our trip to New Orleans, and it was such an amazing experience. I cannot stress this enough: if you visit New Orleans, it’s really important that you make the effort to understand the real history of this place instead of just enjoying what was born from its terrible history.. Mikhala gives a real, truthful, sometimes painful context to the horrific foundation New Orleans was built on, but you walk away feeling privileged to have heard her stories and feeling uplifted that so much joy emerged from such pain. An experience like this will enhance your visit, giving you renewed appreciation for what you experience in the city. We learned so much and feel so much more connected to the city and the culture. I highly recommend this experience! Thank you, Mikhala!

Most definitely a “Have to do” for anyone interested in an eye and heart opening experiencing the history of NOLA, and really this country and the history of humanity. (Micro into the macro) Mikhala is real, deep hearted and connects with you where you feel comfortable. A great guide that can invite connection without expectation or limitation. Changing how we connect by example. Do it! You will only appreciate that you have yourself this gift. My step Mother and I do!

This was a fantastic experience, and one that I hope I am fortunate enough to attend again. Mikhala’s presentation and level of knowledge are better than impressive. I’m a Louisiana native who has visited New Orleans multiple times over many years, and even I had no idea about the history of the architecture & so many other aspects of life there, not to mention the early music scene. I absolutely recommend this experience to anyone looking to gain a better understanding and greater appreciation of New Orleans’ history and jazz roots.
