Wat je gaat doen

Chernobyl power plant explosion was by far the biggest atomic human-made catastrophe, putting 400 times more radioactive material into the Earth's atmosphere than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Since you still can't go to Chernobyl, Vilnius is your best bet to feel the atmosphere of the time and that is why 90% of the show was filmed Lithuania!

Unlike neighbouring capitals, Vilnius preserved large suburban areas with consistently soviet buildings. You can truly feel like getting back to the ‘86 when the accident happened. Combining the scenery with the collection of stories from the local people who lived at the time or worked at the nuclear power plant, exclusive behind the scenes snippets, secret KGB files and history of Lithuania - all of this will put you in the state of mind to understand the cultural context of Soviet Union.

We will go through some of the exact places where the scenes were shot. You will have a chance to compare the Screenshots from the series with the actual buildings to find out what was manipulated and what was kept real. The tour includes transportation with a car where we will drive to the far end of the city where typical tourists never go. For full immersion into the ’80s, you will also get some uniquely Lithuanian and Soviet snacks such as traditional salted fat, local moonshine, blood-chocolate used by the Russian army and other things.

Chernobyl TV show was filmed in the backyard of my house. Every shot in the series portraying a Pripyat is in fact a shot of my childhood playground in Vilnius.

My parents lived through the Chernobyl disaster while their friends were sent for the ‘clean-up’ after the explosion. I am very well familiar with the local stories and could give authentic depiction of the Soviet life as well as the events that followed after the disaster.

I’m a traveller myself. For the past 3 years, I have visited over 50+ countries in Asia, Europe and America. One of the biggest journeys I've done was an 18.000km road trip on a small scooter bike over Latin America. I know what a good story is and the tour was crafted to give you some moments to remember.

Waar je naartoe gaat

The tour will revolve around Fabijoniskes where you will observe the sea of monolithic concrete multistore buildings that appeared on the TV show Chernobyl as Pripyat. The journey will continue in Zirmunai where we will visit VCES palace to explore its' award-winning art-deco interior which was seen in the series appearing as a hotel lobby, bar and other places.

Kristijonas was lovely, friendly guy. However we paid 110 EUR for 2 people and this tour sadly was not worth that. The tour is new and it really needs to develop. We were literally walking around Fabijoniskes for 1 hour and were taken to arts and sports complex (which was quite cool, but that was it). After 2 hours of walking we were taken back to uzupis. We had some snacks during the tour but the walk we could’ve done easily ourselves. I think this tour needs to grow to become an immersive experience. After we got a chance to reflect, we were quite disappointed with the money we spent. At the moment, I do not recommend it but I hope Kristijonas manages to develop it further as it is a cool concept.

Kristijonas is a very friendly and accommodating host, however I didn't feel after reflecting on the tour that it was worth the price. Kris met us in 80s clothes to set the scene and also tried to play some music in the car however this was quite tricky to hear, we were then driven to blocks of flats where the show was filmed before having a drink of moonshine (1 shot) in the car. Kris would give us some insight as we walked around and showed pictures of the shooting process and the buildings. He then drove us to another filming location whilst giving us some more snacks in the car. The experience lasted 2 hours in total from initial pick up, and I cant help but feel for the price that it could be improved significantly. If Kris is looking to make this an opportunity to immerse yourself in the 80s he should look to use a car from the time period. Or he could look to link up with a local restaurant or something to set the scene as well, eating some snacks in the back of an electric car didn't really set the scene. As mentioned Kris is a good host and it felt like this could be something exciting but at this moment in time I really couldn't recommend this experience.
