I am glad I have been doing this two years, and have many many good reviews to put reviews like this in perspective. Some people are hard to please for reasons that can be quite surprising. These guests should’ve stayed in a hotel, and paid the hotel prices. I appreciate that they did focus on some of the positives of Sunrise Cottage.
***It is a soft mattress in Sunrise Cottage, less than a year old, some people love it, but if a guest likes a more firm mattress, I do suggest our other options which have different mattress choices. There are also two single beds in Sunrise Cottage, which some guests have pushed together. They are also firmer mattresses.
***I did not get a chance to meet these guests because I was recovering from an unpleasant medical procedure, but yes normally we are very happy to meet our guests, and make a point to do so.
***As to visiting the basement, I have never heard it expressed in such a suspect or sinister manner. We like to show people who need to use the laundry machines in the basement, that there are places where the floor is uneven and there are places visitors can bump their head in the basement. So yes, if someone needs to use the laundry while they are here, we like to show people where the lights are, and the places where they might bump their head in the basement for safety.
***Yes, there is a small slope to the floor of Sunrise cottage, about a two or three inch difference over 21 feet of width, as it has settled over the last 68 years, if she was looking to buy the cottage I could see this being a problem, but for short term visitors I can’t even imagine why this is an issue for a beachside vintage cottage, which is advertised as such, and this is the first anyone has ever chosen to write about it. I went out and checked the doors after reading this review, and they open and close fine.
***If a guest plans to play marbles on the floor, yes it will be a problem, if a guest was just staying for a few nights, it’s not a problem.
***These are wood structures, made with natural materials, and are subject to natural expansion and contraction due to temperature and humidity, Again, if someone was looking to buy the house I could see this being a significant issue, but for a short term visitor, at the very reasonable price we offer these for our location, it was surprising hearing this was an issue for this guest.
***We do hope in the next few years to raise this cottage up because of the increased flood hazards and rising sea levels, a very significant expense, which will likely be tens of thousands of dollars, at that time we will address this specific issue. But yes, if a slight slope in the floor is going to be disconcerting to a guest I highly recommend renting one of our other options, Which do not have this specific issue.

In the meantime, we are grateful for the hundreds of guests who appreciate our vintage Maine coastal home, and consider it’s quirks charming and not negative. We continue to make improvements to the property, and it gets better and better every year, as our returning guests could attest to.
We hope it feels like visiting distant family or friends of friends, and never like a commercial experience. We are happy to share what we have, and we appreciate our visitors whose contributions help us maintain the property and allow us to continue to offer it for years to come to Pine Point visitors.
