This newly built roundhouse is set in the garden of Kaira Bungo on the edge of Footsteps Eco-Lodge in a quiet rural area a mile from the sea. It can be rented on its own or in conjunction with Kaira Bungo (see listing; special rates apply). The roundhouse is literally 20 paces from the main house. It is eco friendly with solar powered electricity and hot water but after much deliberation we put in a flush toilet with soak-away. It is light and airy with high roof. Super-king sized bed.

De ruimte
The roundhouse is set in a private garden adjacent to Footsteps Eco-Lodge. Our guests have access to all the facilities of The lodge (footstepsinthegambia.com). These include bar, excellent restaurant, plunge pool, sunloungers, table tennis and much more, all 100 metres away. The lodge will be happy to arrange trips, taxis etc and the staff are a delightful and friendly group who take pride in making the guests welcome.

In addition to this, the house is managed by our ‘man on the ground’, Omar Touray, who will meet you on arrival, show you round and help you with any problems during your stay.

Most guests eat mainly at the lodge, but there is an Italian restaurant (Birdsnest) in a lovely wooded setting a ten minute walk away , and a couple of other lodges (Nemacuta and Kuba 1 and 2) on the way to the beach. The beach is around a half hour walk along sandy tracks with juice bars dotted along the way.

Swimming is good, and the beaches great for long or short walks, but it is the Atlantic Ocean and care needs to be exercised. There are no lifeguards in the vicinity.

There is plenty to see and do and Omar or the Lodge will suggest and help you organise trips. In addition, we run a small Charity - Kenali Community Schools Trust - and have built and run a Nursery School in the next village. If you would like to get below the surface and arrange a visit, Omar will happily take you there, but if you were moved to make a financial donation, please get in touch with us when you get home. Omar will give you email contact etc.

Gambia is a birdwatchers paradise and many different species can be seen within the grounds and on short walks through the forest or to the beach. Guided birdwatching walks can also be arranged.

Toegang voor gasten
All the spaces of Footsteps EcoLodge as well as the immediate garden of the roundhouse. There is also a yoga area and yoga classes can often be arranged at the lodge.

Andere dingen waar je op moet letten
ELECTRICITY
is solar generated and stored in batteries so needs to be carefully used, especially on cloudy days. Try and remember to put out lights when not in use and charge your phones etc during daylight hours. If you are careless the supply may fail (it’s always advisable to have a torch handy). PLEASE NOTE THAT POWER HUNGRY EQUIPMENT SUCH AS HAIRDRYERS CANNOT BE USED.

WATER SUPPLY
Our water comes from a borehole/well and is stored in a tank so best not to drink it unless boiled. Drink bottled water or the filtered water freely available in Reception.

HEALTH ISSUES
You are staying in an area where Malaria is endemic so please take appropriate precautions (antimalarials, anti mozzy sprays) especially in the rainy season from June to October. We can provide mosquito nets if you wish.

Hygiene is a major issue in The Gambia and handshaking a potent means of passing on germs. Unfortunately all Gambians shake hands whenever they meet, so wash hands as often as possible and consider taking an antibacterial hand gel with you when you are out.

SUN PROTECTION
The sun is fierce even in midwinter and it is advisable to protect against it at all times. Because it is so hot you will often find yourself looking for shade but suncreams and sun hats are necessary for most people. Incidentally, afternoon temps range from high 20s to mid 30s but mornings and evenings can be cool and some light extra layers are often needed.

Gunjur, the nearest village/small town, is a half hour walk. Worth visiting the local colourful market (fruit, veg and fish). Basic supplies can also be bought in the local mini market.

The beach is a half hour walk in the other direction. Gunjur fishing village is about an hour and a half from Your house along the beach.

Senegal can be reached on an interesting day boat t4ip from Kartong. Also doubles up as a bird watching opportunity for water birds.

Senegambia, the main tourist strip, is 45 to 60 mins by taxi. Serekunda, the main urban area, is about the same. Brikama is a small town about half an hour by taxi. It has a big and colourful market and an interesting craft market.

If you would like to see the indigenous snakes close up, we would recommend the ‘reptile farm’ about 20 minutes away by taxi. This may may be your only chance to hold a python!

I am a practicing psychoanalyst and retired psychiatrist and write about psychoanalysis and the arts. My wife and I have two houses, one in Tuscany, Italy, and another in the Gambia. We chose the Italian house because of its location - the incredible views, the comfortable isolation and the friendliness of the local people. When we first saw it, the house was half ruined and hidden in undergrowth, but we always knew it would be alright and we've turned it around and given it a new kind of life. The garden has been a special delight and we've slowly helped it to realise its potential. Everything is changed, of course, from the old smallholding with a well in the middle of what is now the dining room floor, and a place for the animals in what is now our 'utility room', but nevertheless we've tried to create a structure in harmony with its surroundings in which everything is made from the stone in the mountain and the wood of the local chestnut trees. If you appreciate these thoughts, we think you'll enjoy your stay. If you're looking for the bright lights, you'll be disappointed because here there are only the fireflies. We chose the Gambian house for somewhat similar reasons but the initial impulse to go to the Gambia was the proximity of winter sunshine - only a 6 hour flight from the UK. However, we quickly fell in love with the warm and friendly Gambians and after several years have become quite involved with the local community. You cannot go to the Gambia and not be touched by the resilience and friendliness of the people in the face of unrelenting poverty and inevitably it makes you want to help. It is easy, however, to get scammed, and if you want to help, it is generally safer through a project that is up and running. We made several false starts but now have a small charity which has built and runs a nursery school in nearby Sambuyang village. The charity is Gambian registered - Kenali community Schools Trust - and the school with 60children of 4 to 7 is called Kenali Community Nursery School. If you would like to visit, our manager in The Gambia, Omar Touray, will arrange to take you there.
