Fairly easy to get to this lookout. My house lies between the 2 yellow fields and under the tall green pine trees close to the river and railway tracks. Photo credit: Dwayne Rourke.Winter getaway tucked in under the trees, with canyon hills in the background.

This is a clean one bedroom quirky 1800's heritage cabin/house. Comfy bed, well stocked kitchen, sunny location.

The house is modest but artistic, heated by firewood or propane, cosy and relaxing, set on a private treed lot, in a friendly neighbourhood.

The location is in the heart of Canada's desert canyon country and walks into Nature are at the door.

This cabin was a writing cabin for the famous British ethno-biologist, James Teit, who is acclaimed for stepping into local life as a young immigrant, marrying a local indigenous woman, Antuk, and riding the hills with the men for hunting and social/political/cultural gatherings. He recorded much of the Thompson Indian culture and language, preserving it through the dark times, and supporting the indigenous residents near and far with land negotiations during the rising British colonization. Later, the cabin was a stage coach driver sleep over, then a train ticket office, and finally once again a family residence.

Listen to the trains rumbling through, observe the big horn sheep that frequent this area, breath the clean sage scented air, let your gaze soften and lengthen, absorbing the soft lines, and muted browns of the surrounding hills and mountains. Lounge by the inside fire, or outside bon fire (except fire season), hike the surrounding hillsides, or swim in the river. Fishing and white water rafting in season.

I ask guests to let their host give a 15 minute orientation to the house and yard, (or read the one page description of House Quirks) and be responsive if issues or questions arise.
Orientation in winter includes wood stove operation etc with either myself or my friendly Co-host, Selena. We remain on call for any needs that might arise.
We ask guests to leave by 11am checkout time on the morning of the final day and, unless they want to see me in person, I usually say my goodbyes via email.

The rest of your time is totally private unless you go out into the village and meet the very interesting residents that might be at the cafe up the street, or local pub, or any other community public event, or just walking by on a stroll.

An adorable getaway from the city, nestled within the most awe-inspiring, humbling desert mountains. A colorful artists' cabin sitting quietly on clay riverbanks. Trains glide through the landscape as a musical reminder of the history of the place, and how it has been altered by the gold rush and colonization. A space where one can get in touch with themselves, and nature, as well as history. A deep breath of fresh air, with a hint of wood smoke. We had such a lovely time.

Much as advertised, basic accommodation, comfortable bed. We had a nice rest before continuing our trip. Thanks!

The cabin is perfect for anybody who likes the unusual and quirky with modern comforts such as WiFi and microwave, etc. The location felt quite remote to us and I would describe it as quiet except for the train noise which is to be expected from a cabin right by the tracks and is also mentioned in the description. The kitchen comes fully stocked with items such as tea, cereal, milk etc. and the bed was comfortable. The Japanese style shower was the only downside for us. The locals we met were all very friendly and the food at the Packing House Café was delicious! Jean responded very quickly to any questions we had and gave us very good tips. We felt very well supported even though Jean was in Vancouver during our stay. We only stayed one night on route to Vancouver so we didn’t get the chance to explore the area very much.

Jean's place is a great little cabin getaway. The town is tiny and charming and the cabin has a lovely fireplace to fall asleep to the soothing crackle of a chilly night in Northern Canada. Jean provided a binder with lots of tips for staying and also places in town for food and hiking. It was a great stay for my furry companion and I, with a full kitchen and fridge for use, which is helpful when you're on a long road trip. I would stay again and recommend it to anyone in the area.

Hi. I love the outdoors and wild dramatic landscapes - that are still close to modern amenities. I want to share this with you.

Highway #1 travellers, passing through, are welcome to stop in for an overnight before driving into or out of Vancouver. Others wanting to explore this landscape are welcome to stay longer and get deeper into the experience of this space.

I moved into this wee, turn of the century, homestead house, on the banks of the Thompson River in this village of about 250 people, just as soon as I could retire.
I used to help make public television happen, teach adults how to become teachers with a global perspective, and organize programs requiring team work. Now I bring all those skills into my village and surrounding area to support community theatre, live music, and community building activities.
The Thompson River Canyon is a strongly Indigenous territory. First Nation's communities run up and down the canyon and identify as Nlaka'pamux Nation. Visiting in this area is rich with culture if you seek it out. Our local Band office welcomes visitors who inquire about their art displays and programs.
I continue to be curious about how the original people survived on this desert, canyon, country land, and developed culture with spirituality, music and dance. You too can walk these hills and imagine how to live on this land.

All my guests here at my wee house have, for over 12 years, been warmly greeted by the locals and given directions to the many hikes, and swimming holes, cafe's, pub, and more.
By the way, I love animals and my front and back yard are fenced in and dog friendly. But take note: determined 4 legged escape artists can get out and go on a "walk about" and visit the neighbour dogs.
Trees provide shade and privacy in the yard, and in contrast, brilliant summer sunlight explodes every where, lifting the spirit and beckoning the visitor to the lanes, parks, rivers and hills.

My house has a new queen size bed in a private room, a second day bed in the living room.
I have a Japanese style walk in bath/shower, limited wifi, free phone, ( no cell signal in this place), well equipped kitchen, yoga area, small TV with CBC and Knowledge only. Take a break from "screen time" !!!
Interior decorating reflects the landscape and culture I live in here - colourful walls, local paintings and sculptures.
I live a restful peaceful yet stimulating life and love to offer my home to others who are either passing through, looking for time alone, hiking the hills, or venturing out for the friendly village chit chat.
I enjoy helping my guests create the experiences they are seeking and go the extra mile to attend to the details. If you want - tell me your goals or vision for your special stay and I will accommodate the space to support your wishes.
My neighbour and friend, Sandra, is assisting with this Airbnb accommodation and if you are lucky, you will meet her during your visit. Raised in this village she has much local knowledge to share and enjoys hosting guests when I am away on other adventures.

THIS IS A RAILWAY VILLAGE SO EXPECT TRAIN WHISTLES AND RUMBLES DAY AND NIGHT.

My life motto "Be Kind, Be Kind, Be Kind".
