The cottage is fully booked forJune, July, and August of 2021, but there may be cancellations, so keep checking. There's availability in May; September 1 - October 1 is completely open; and there's some availability around the second week of October. Late summer and early autumn are wonderful times on Georgetown Island: a little slower than the height of the season, with fall foliage coming on.

We observe Maine's Covid-19 policies, available on the Governor's "Keep Maine Healthy" web page.

De ruimte
Our cottage is one of four on a ten-acre peninsula on the east side of the mouth of the Kennebec River. It's a serene, lovely spot overlooking Todd Bay, a shallow tidal basin/flat off the main river channel. Our children learned to kayak in the bay (a path leads from our deck, along which they also picked blueberries). The thirteen summers we spent there--and many winter holidays--were magical for us. We hope your time will be too.

The cottage is insulated to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Its primary heat is from baseboard electric units in all the rooms, with a small wood stove in the living room. For summer, there are ceiling fans in the bedrooms, living room, and dining room, and there's usually a breeze blowing up from Todd Bay. It comfortably accommodates six, with two large bedrooms and one smaller "guest room." All three have large closets, and the bigger two rooms have dressers or built-in drawers; the guest room has two luggage stands in the closet. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking anything from blueberry pancakes in the morning to lobsters, corn, and clams at the end of the day.

We acquired the cottage in 2002 and enjoyed it in many different ways. In the summer we spent a lot of time on the screened porch, watching the weather coming in from the west, the tides rolling in and out of the Bay, and the birds in the trees that framed our view. We watched red-gold sunsets and, later in the evenings, fireflies down the slope. The cottage was our home base for exploring the tidal waters in kayaks that we kept at the end of our path, for digging clams at low tide, and for driving across Georgetown Island to lobster rolls on the wharf at Five Islands, or to the long beaches and surf of Reid State Park. There's always something to do in Georgetown and its surrounding communities. When it rained we stayed inside and read, or played games with our kids, or went to the Maritime Museum in Bath or the Boothbay Aquarium. We have prepared an expanded "house manual" for our guests in which we list many of our favorite local destinations; you'll receive a digital version when you make a reservation, and you'll find a paper copy in the cottage on your arrival.

In the fall and winter we came whenever we could. In October the road down from Bath blazed with astonishingly bright color, and as the leaves fell we saw more and more of the Kennebec River from our windows. Usually snow would fall by late December, a treat for our Californian children. We have decided to keep the cottage open for rental through late autumn for guests who want to experience Maine in its beautiful, quiet off-seasons.

It has idiosyncrasies. The main entrance is through the laundry room/"mudroom" (an advantage in winter). Like all other Georgetown homes, it's on a well/septic system, so guests need to be careful about water use, but in fact we've always had enough. There's no trash pickup, and we'll leave instructions on taking trash to the town's Transfer Station two and a half miles up the road. There's a wi-fi network for the house (and a small study with some great views), but no cable TV; we rely on streaming services. And the closest gas stations and supermarkets are in Bath, twelve miles or so to the north.

Toegang voor gasten
Guests have access to all of the property except the garage (used for storage) and the crawl space under the house.

Georgetown, Maine, Verenigde Staten

Georgetown is a town and island at the mouth of the Kennebec, connected by bridges to the mainland. Its center is about nine miles south of Route 1 and the small city of Bath, Maine. The cottage is two and a half miles south of Georgetown Center, in Bay Point, one of the quietest neighborhoods of Georgetown Island.

It's rural and slow-paced in our southwest corner of the island, but there's plenty to do in Georgetown and beyond: sandy beaches, hiking trails, historical sites, museums, antique stores, restaurants of all kinds. We've been exploring midcoast Maine for thirty summers (and several winters) and still feel like newcomers. We've prepared a guide in the cottage for our guests to some of our favorite nearby destinations, but you'll probably find things we didn't know about.

In all our explorations, however, we've valued most being able to come home to the quiet of Todd Bay and Spinney Point.

I'm a former college English professor living in rural coastal Maine after a forty-two-year teaching career, most of it spent in Southern California. My wife Cheryl is a semi-retired plant scientist and conservation biologist; she's also a dog breeder and certified hunt test judge. Together we enjoy traveling, gardening, working with our dogs, hosting guests in our cottage up the road--and simply living day-to-day in a tranquil and beautiful place.

Tijdens je verblijf
In the mid-2010s we inherited a family home nearby in Georgetown and moved there, with some regret at leaving the cottage on Todd Bay. So we're usually available if you have problems during your stay, and we're also happy to give advice or recommendations on things to do. But we'll generally try to leave you alone. A big part of the pleasure for us of coming to Maine was just that, the sense of escape into tranquility.
