Tiny House in Mojácar Pueblo

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Cabrerra, this compact apartment is one of the cheapest options in town. It's suitable for solo travellers and couples who don't mind ducking through doorways and climbing hills.

Mojacar is a beautiful, but very hilly place, with narrow winding lanes and breathtaking views

De ruimte
This is our tiny house. It’s a compact self-contained one-bedroom apartment. Suitable for solo travellers or couples who don’t mind climbing steps and ducking through doorways.

Tiny house living has become a trend during the last few years. The idea is to come up with space-saving hacks, such as one piece of furniture being used for dual purposes.

Our flat has a living room/kitchen combo, a separate bathroom and a vaulted cave room with a bed on a raised platform. We have focused on making it cosy, and have chosen small furniture where possible.

The kitchen has a 2 hob burner which can be put away to make space. We didn’t want large cupboards taking up space so we have made use of the walls as hanging spaces.

In days gone by the cave would have served as a food store - it’s relatively cool in there. What is now the kitchen/living room would have been where the animals were kept. Most households had a donkey for carrying loads, a goat for milk and cheese, and chickens for eggs and meat.

More recently the long living room served as an art gallery. Mojácar has a long history of attracting artists. It became something of an artists’ colony in the 1960s after the mayor at the time offered free accommodation for artists in order to liven up the place. It worked, and became a hub of creative activity, on which it still thrives today.

There is no outside space, but it’s nestled in the Sierra Cabrerra mountain range. In less than 5 minutes walking you can be out of the village and into the mountains. There are stunning views of the village and the coast line. On clear days you can look to the north and see the Sierra Maria-Los Velez mountain range. Also you can walk to the beach in 20 minutes. There’s a regular bus service connecting the village to the playa, where you can find bars and restaurants literally on the beach, serving the fresh catches of the day.

The village of Mojácar Pueblo is one of Spain’s prettiest towns. Walking through the winding lanes you’ll see many signs of the Moorish past. The inhabitants take pride in their pristine white houses, and use them as a backdrop for their jaw-dropping floral displays.

The bars and restaurants around the village reflect the many different cuisines of Spain and further afield. We have put together a village guide in the listing. In there you can see our recommendations. It’s a lovely village for a stroll and some excellent tapas. There are some very fine restaurants too. There are several spectacular miradors (viewing points).

What we provide:

There is coffee and tea, sugar, salt, pepper and olive oil. We don’t provide milk but the shop is only a few minutes walk away. They keep siesta hours, so they’re closed between 2 and 5.30.

We supply basic shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and hand soap. There is also washing up liquid.

We provide 1 towel per guest plus a hand towel in the bathroom.

Bedding is provided, plus a spare blanket should it be needed.

We want you to be aware of any limitations before you book. The paragraphs above can serve as the pros. Here is a small list of cons:

There's no TV.

The tap water is drinkable, but it’s treated and tastes a little unusual. It’s not for everybody.

The walls of old houses like ours can flake and peel - it’s just a fact of life in the area. The houses were built using local sand, brought from the mountains using donkeys. There is a high salt content in the sand, and it pushes the paint off the walls.

The nearest parking is a few minutes walk away. It’s not arduous, but it can puff you out, especially if you’re carrying luggage.

The ceiling in the bedroom is low - as is the doorway.

The kitchen is basic. Toaster, kettle, 2 hobs, fridge/freezer, no oven. It’s suitable for basic cooking. With the wealth of cafes and restaurants close by most people don’t end up using it much.

There is no washing machine.

The village itself contains some very steep lanes and some of the stairways around the town have no handrails.

There is a large population of feral cats, and they will come in if you leave the door open. Some of them are very sweet, but some of them aren’t.

The heat means it’s generally a bad idea to leave food out. It will attract flies and ants. The best way to prevent that is to throw out any refuse as soon as you can.

That’s all I can think of! Enjoy your holiday and let Mojácar work its magic.

I’m a professional jazz double bass player. Myself and my girlfriend Sara (jazz singer) teach workshops in Almeria and give concerts all over the world. We are non-smokers and we’re pretty quiet when we are home. Cooking, cycling and listening to jazz music are our favourite activities.
