The Barn is our newest and largest sleeping quarters with a queen size bed in the main room and a loft area that can accommodate 2 singles, or create a full size area with movable floor mattresses.
No electricity, but many windows to let in a breeze.
Parking is left of the door and there are 4 steps to climb for entry with out a railing.
The Outhouse (bathroom) is located behind The Barn in a separate shared structure.
Free coffee (black/regular) in the a.m. at the Admin Building.

De ruimte
Bare Bones Bivouac is a quiet place in a remote south western section of SD. It is considered high prairie, and neighboring cattle graze here twice a year in May and late September. There is wildlife in the night and early morning hours if you are tuned in. Many different plants grow here, and I try to avoid stepping on the flowers and definitely the cactus!
The Cabin is the first building we built (started in 2012; finished in 2018), and is now the last in a row of sleeping spaces. The first you will pass is Mom's Camper, a 4 person pop-up style camper. The second is a small 12x8 ft building called the Boathouse, and then the Barn which looks like a skyscraper in comparison (that's YOU!) because the roof style allows for a sleeping loft inside. All of these have a view of Elk Mountain and its lookout tower, and a very large, ever changing sky! The lack of trees in that direction is the result of fire ten, and almost twenty, years ago and the reason I do not permit campfires on our land. Also, there is almost always a fire ban during July and August.
There are five designated camping sites located along the other base side of our hill and are for tents, car/truck campers, and small pull-behind camper/trailers. They will have a port-o-john, and their own outdoor shower set-up.
The minimum (you plus me= 2) and maximum (37) amount of people vary day to day, but you can generally expect the lower numbers of around 10 or less.
Please be respectful of our property, the furnishings, nature all around you, and each other.

Waar je zult verblijven

Edgemont, South Dakota, Verenigde Staten

Newcastle, WY is the closest town; 12 miles West of Bare Bones Bivouac. There you will find gas stations, restaurants, groceries and a movie theatre. Six miles west of us is a small lake with a picnic table, public boat launch and public swimming. I've heard swim shoes recommended, but not required.
Custer, SD is 25 miles East of BBB and is the entrance to the Custer State Park, and all that the Black Hills has to offer. Jewel Cave is halfway between us and Custer, SD... and is a cool place to visit on a hot day!

My own road-tripping travel revolves around my ceramics explorations. I fire exclusively in wood-fueled kilns and I like to attend workshops, classes, and conferences that have to do with wood-fired ceramics. I primarily live in Wisconsin, but spend part of June, all of July and most of August each summer in South Dakota where I am building a future camp and clay-ground called Bare Bones Bivouac (Camp and Clay). I am planning on building a wood-fired kiln and studio here and will be offering clay options in the future. Currently, I rent three cabins, one pop-up camper and a tent site thru Air BnB during the summer months while I work on the space. I really enjoy meeting new people and exchanging adventure stories!
