Wildlife conservation focused accommodation, set in 20 hectares of rewilding native bush, with spectacular views over Otago Harbour. Fully self contained, comfortable and private. 1km from Portobello and close to all of the Otago Peninsula's major attractions.

De ruimte

The name says it all. We have spent a good deal of time and resources over the past 10 years rewilding 20Ha of land by removing introduced and highly destructive possums – and other exotic pests - and are now enjoying the resulting regeneration of the native bush and the welcome return of many of our native birds and animals.

If you have an interest in the conservation of New Zealand's natural biodiversity and the concepts of rewilding, then Possums' End is the place to stay.

At night, weather permitting, we have dark skies that make for outstanding sky watching. Amazing views of the milky way can be seen and the Aurora Australis - the Southern Lights - may put in an appearance. To the naked eye the aurora is often seen as an eerie glow, but with a correctly set DSLR camera beautiful pictures can be taken - see some examples in our gallery taken at Hoopers Inlet, just a kilometer from Possums' End. We have developed an Aurora view point for the use of guests.

Possums' End accommodation is a fully self contained single bedroom homestay adjacent to the owner's own house, backing on to regenerating bush.

The lounge/diner/kitchenette has stunning views across Otago Harbour and beyond to the Pacific Ocean. The kitchenette is well appointed with a dual hob, microwave and ample crockery and cutlery.

A generous bedroom with a queen sized bed leads to an en-suite with underfloor heating and a shower over a large relaxing bath.

The utility room has an automatic top loading washing machine and an area to hang wet clothing.

A small private outside area allows for al-fresco dining with views over Otago Harbour surrounded by bush and native birdlife.

Possums' End is set in regenerating bush where plants and wildlife take precedence. Therefore we must insist no pets. No Smoking. No fires. No BBQ. For security reasons guests must provide a photographic ID upon arrival. Guests use Possums' End and its facilities, including use of the wider property, entirely at their own risk.

Multiple hazards exist at Possums' End. For example: dense bush, steep drop offs and large areas of tree nettle. All of which conspire to make it unsuitable for children. We have a very steep gravel driveway which can challenge inexperienced drivers.

If you want a stylish space in beautiful natural surroundings then choose Possum's End. You might want to find out more about the title, but you'll probably be exploring the wonderful headland or just chilling out listening to the birds just outside the door. Shaun and Helen are wonderful hosts. What a joy to find this place.

It is the perfect place to stay: wonderful views, privacy, great facilities, varied bird life, impressive skies and inspiring conversations, etc. I was in Possum's end for 2.5 weeks and enjoyed every second.

This place is gorgeous and so are the hosts (and their two dogs). Shaun and Helen are just the most warm and gracious host! Even before our arrival they contacted us to ensure that since we were coming from out of town that we found the place easily and even recommended some lovely places to stop by for a bite on the way. Even though it was late in the evening when we arrived due to the bad weather, they really took them time to make us feel welcome and get situated to the property and the surrounding area. The place was self-contained with all ammenities, a great view from the kitchen/dinning area and lovingly decorated. Every little detail has been well thought of to make our stay more welcoming; from the toiletries and bath bombs to the bottle of wine and chocolate treats on our arrival. Not to mention the picnic and kitchen utilities provided as well as a pair of bikes. The surrounding areas and native bush were also just magnificent, even in the wet weather we were in. Beaches, native birds, hillside tracks, it has it all.
