Kasteel
“Beaumaris on the island of Anglesey is famous as the greatest castle never built. It was the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I in Wales – and perhaps his masterpiece. Here Edward and his architect James of St George took full advantage of a blank canvas: the ‘beau mareys’ or ‘beautiful marsh’ beside the Menai Strait. By now they’d already constructed the great castles of Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech. This was to be their crowning glory, the castle to end all castles. The result was a fortress of immense size and near-perfect symmetry. No fewer than four concentric rings of formidable defences included a water-filled moat with its very own dock. The outer walls alone bristled with 300 arrow loops. But lack of money and trouble brewing in Scotland meant building work had petered out by the 1320s. The south gatehouse and the six great towers in the inner ward never reached their intended height. The Llanfaes gate was barely started before being abandoned. So the distinctive squat shape of Beaumaris tells of a dream that never quite came true. Still it takes its rightful place on the global stage as part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward I World Heritage Site. Because this castle is special – both for the scale of its ambition and beauty of its proportions. Gloriously incomplete Beaumaris is perhaps the supreme achievement of the greatest military architect of the age. ”

“The brasserie on the ground floor is gorgeous and the bar is rustic and inviting. However, if you want high end dining then upstairs is an upscale eatery, which is fabulous. ”

“Neaumaris - LL58 8BB - 01248 810429 The Midland, with its chic and understated decor (which has breathed new life into this beautiful old ban (hence the name) has proved VERY popular since its opening! The only downside is the sheer variety on the menu - which leaves you struggling to know which options to go for! True to its Spanish roots though, there are things like Jamon Iberico & Patatas Bravas - but they’ve cleverly managed to mix these up with Welsh recipes - as well as seafood, and ‘garden’ flavours; which makes the whole experience so much more interesting and varied! As with all the best Anglesey eateries, there’s an emphasis on local produce - especially on seafood - and it’s loads of fun getting to try lots of different dishes! So, if you like mixing & matching your meals - this is the place for you! Open in winter (from November until the end of March) from Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm-3pm, then again from 5pm – until last orders (but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Open in Summer (from Easter to November)7 days a week, from 12pm – until last orders. Glutenfree, vegetarian and vegan options available. ”

“Beaumaris - LL58 8BB - 01248 810022 Located in the heart of Beaumaris - in a marvellous medieval property - it’s the perfect place to enjoy the finest ice cream Anglesey has to offer…with lots of other tasty treats upstairs in their restaurant area too! Run by the lovely Tony and Lyn, they do sorbets as well - and with ice-cream flavours such as crème brûlée, bara brith, rhubarb crumble & jammy dodger, you’ll be spoilt for choice! Upstairs they offer savoury & sweet pancakes, pizzas, soups, sandwiches, ciabattas, dessert waffles - and even breakfast options – so there’s something for everyone in this pretty parlour. By the way, Tony trained in the art of ice cream making at the world famous Carpigiani University, Italy - so you’re in safe hands! Made fresh on the premises - you can be sure it’s be the best tasting ‘gelato’ for miles! Open daily: 10am - 5pm - they only close on Christmas Day! You’ll also see them out & about (working hard as usual) in their mobile ice-cram stall at outdoor events and so on! ”

“Beaumaris - LL58 8AP - 01248 810651 A lovely little Italian restaurant right on Beaumaris High Street, they offer a wide range of antipasti, pasta & pizza – with heavenly homemade bread & pizza dough too; everything here is always delicious! Although these times can change, they usually open every day in winter from 5pm - 10pm. However, in the summer months they serve lunch too (between 12pm - 3pm), with an evening service (Sunday – Thursday) from 6pm - 9:30pm, and on Friday & Saturdays between 5pm - 10pm.”

“Hotel with a cafe containing a large assortment of mismatched leather armchairs. Have a cup of tea or coffee on a rainy day and watch the world go by on Beaumaris sea-front. A hidden gem.”

“Fancy a trip to Puffin island and hopefully see some puffins, then check out Seacoast Safaris in Beaumaris. May to Mid August is the best time to sea any Puffins, as they only visit the Island during breeding season. Worth a trip during this time of the year! You might even be lucky enough to see Dolphins and Sealions on your way!”

“Narrated cruise from the pier at Beaumaris out to Puffin island. You can often see seals and puffins at the right time of year. There are usually spaces available to book on the day, but in busy summer holidays you may need to hang around Beaumaris for a few hours before a place is free (see Beaumaris entry to realise this is no hardship!)”

“Beaumaris - LL58 8BS - 01248 811055 Although there are loads of other lovely places to eat-out in Beaumaris, we always seem to end up here! Situated just behind the town’s littlee pier, and with stunning sea views available (both inside and out) it really is a sweet little spot! Offering drinks, breakfasts, lunch & supper, their speciality sandwich melts, homemade soups, steak & ale pie, fillet steaks, and Welsh rarebit are all excellent! They also have a good choice of vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan options - and a great children's menu too. They’ve already been voted the 3rd best seafood restaurant in Anglesey on TripAdvisor; which isn’t surprising if you’ve tried their famous homemade fish & chips (in gin and tonic batter), Menai mussels, or dressed crab salad! Sitting outside - (over-looking the Menai Strait across to Snowdonia), with a hot chocolate in hand and local treat on your plate, is simply delightful! In summer they’re open daily from 8am - 9.30pm – and the rest of the year from Monday - Friday, 9am- 9pm – with Saturday and Sunday hours being from 8.30am - 9pm. ”
