“I mean. Really. You’re in Charlottesville. Thomas Jefferson’s home is here. It’s beautiful. The gardens and views are overwhelmingly gorgeous. The history virtually oozes off the mountain and spills like lava down over everything. Just go there. There’s a kid-friendly house tour and a kids’ room with fun activities.”

Art Museum
“The North Carolina Museum of Art has more than a dozen galleries holding works from around the world and a variety of art types. Originally starting with 139 works from Europe and America, the museum has grown to include African, Egyptian and Jewish works of art while also expanding European and ancient American holdings. With 30 added Rodin sculptures, the NCMA leads the holdings of this artist’s work in the southeastern United States. Other galleries hold everything from Renaissance paintings to contemporary photography. Exhibitions also run at the museum for several months at a time for guests to visit. Outside the museum is the 164-acre Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park, recently expanded and featuring monumental public art installations inspired by the natural world and preservation of landscapes, including the Gyre rings, Cloud Chamber for the Trees and Sky and Askew, as well as several recreational activities, picnic spots, and wooded trails. Tours are given daily if you or a group would like to learn more about the collections. When it’s time for lunch, you can stop by the Iris restaurant located inside the museum, specializing in contemporary American cuisine in a modern setting. (Also open for dinner! Order from items such as the Iris Burger, Seared Scallops with Red Curry Lemongrass Broth, Seafood Burrito and more.) For those interested in researching art periods or artists, the Art Reference Library holds over 40,000 volumes of books and available catalogs and databases. Kids to seniors can enjoy the many programs occurring throughout the year, including classes, concerts, films, camps, and workshops. Before you leave, head by the Museum Store, where items based on the museum’s collections and exhibits are available to purchase, perfect as souvenirs or gifts for family and friends. Admission is free, while some fees are given for specific programs, exhibitions, and large tours. Hours: Tues.-Thurs., 10am-5pm; Fri., 10am-9pm; Sat.-Sun., 10am-5pm; Mon., closed.”

Park
“Tripple falls and hooker falls are quite popular but very easy to get to for familys and very pretty. If you want to go on longer hikes there are more water falls deeper into the the park. You can also avoid most bike traffic if you desire as there are plenty of walking only trails. For mountain biking there are a ton of awesome spots. If your a beginner or love flow, the lake imaging pond side of the park has some of the most popular trails in the region (ridge line). Fun fast lines and the difficulty of the trails is mostly up to how fast you go. Please be responsible with speeds and respect other trail users. If you want a harder slower more techy trail, check out the ceder rock side of the park. They are some of my favorite trails in the park. Excellent views, and some really fun tech climbs and rocky slick rock descents. If youve never ridden DuPont, this whole are is worth a visit, at least for a half day or days ride.”

Aquarium
“Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies® is literally teeming with life – thousands of exotic sea creatures comprised of more than 350 individual species. There are more fish in this aquarium than there are people living in the entire town of Gatlinburg. Although Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is hundreds of miles from the ocean, the scenic beauty and the abundance of water all around makes the town of Gatlinburg a “natural” location for a world-class aquarium, voted America’s #1 Aquarium by TripAdvisor and ranked Top Destination to see penguins by USA Today Travel! Voted Best U.S. Aquarium by USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice!”
