It has been used to film scenes in Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who among many. The remnants of a 2000 year old Roman opencast iron ore mine are overgrown with gnarled trees and ferns. Rumoured to be part of the inspiration for Tolkien's Middle Earth.

In WW2 over 12,000 tons of ore a week was shipped by rail to Newport to be smelted as part of the war effort. At Christmas time, the mine is transformed into one huge Santas Grotto and is a real treat for children.
