A fabulous Jacobean plantation house in the northern parish of St Peter, with a small rum distillery. While visitors’ attention is rightly focused on the exquisite mansion, with its eclectic furnishings, and a short film on life in Barbados before the Second World War using fascinating footage from the current owners, the Warren family, there is the opportunity to taste some of the modern-era premium rums produced on site. Richard Seale, of Foursquare, has been heavily involved in guiding their development.

With origins in 1703, this is the oldest existing rum brand in the world. Its major shareholder in the modern era is Rémy Cointreau. The visitor centre on the northern outskirts of Bridgetown, the capital, is at a bottling plant. However, this relatively commercialised tourist operation offers a polished presentation on rum production, a brief guided tasting, the option of a buffet lunch, a well-stocked gift shop and cocktail workshops.

The Karting Experience offers participants the chance to drive on a specially-designed 0.41-kilometre circuit in a Birel kart, powered by a 270cc four-stroke Honda engine, capable of up to around 50mph on the straights . . . although it will seem much faster for the driver, sitting just a few inches above the ground.
