Food Scene

In my opinion one of the best bakeries in Akureyri. Open from 7am to 6pm, they stock every bread imaginable and a decent selection of pastries to boot. There is always a lot of customers so the bread is always fresh and most of the time there is a range of free samples that keep my son occupied while I try to resist the sticky donuts. There is a cafe with seating area if you're in no rush and if you are part of a group you can order a breakfast plater that allows you to try a bit of everything. A great stop weather you're passing through or here for a while.

Essentials

Bonus is one of the least expensive supermarkets in town. With a giant kitsch pig as it's logo it's pretty hard to miss and can be quite busy in the summer time being a favorite of tourists. Open from 11am till 6.30pm there is always space in the car park and they leave a good selection of free boxes for you to use which I find far more convenient than buying plastic bags. The fruit and vegetables can be hit or miss but there is always a good selection of meat.

Located within the Mall, Nettó offers a good selection of fruit and veg (well, good for Iceland) that is rarely rotten (a problem that affects most of the other stores). A little more expensive than Bonus or Hagkaup, Nettó has a good range of meats and stocks a reasonable array of health/organic products for anyone with a food allergy. Open from 10am to 7pm, Nettó is one of the better supermarkets.
