Food Scene

This tiny little Montreal landmark has people lining up - rain, hail, snow, or shine - for it's good old-fashioned smoked meat sandwiches. You can't come to Montreal and not at LEAST get a taste of Shwartz's!

Tiny place, big buzz! An old-school neighborhood gem. This hole-in-the-wall is THE spot for sliders and poutine. The vegetarian plate is to die for too! Prices are unbeatable and place is open late. A must!!

This is, hands down, the best sushi spot in town. The sushi is amazing. The staff is fantastic. The music is all old school hip-hop and funky jams that'll have you Shazam-ing all night. YUMMY!!!

Khyber Pass, like most restaurants in the same little corner, has a bring your own wine policy. No corking fee. And, wouldn't you know it, there's a liquor store right nearby. If you like melt-in- your-mouth, fall-off- the-bone lamb, this is my recommendation! Soooo delicious and, if you're anything like me, you'll have to bring at least half of it home for later. The portions are massive. They've got a lovely terrace out back so, if it's a pretty day, maybe call in advance and ask to reserve a spot out there. Bon apetit!

Drinks & Nightlife

No stay in a foreign city would be complete without karaoke. And 3 Minots is my all-time favorite joint! Runs Thursdays through Saturdays. Supportive crowds. Cheap drinks. A hyperactive can-do bartender/MC. What more could you want?! Nobody knows you here! GO NUTS!

Everything Else

The angel statue, at Parc and Rachel, is where you absolutely MUST be on Sundays, weather permitting. Here is where the most Montreal thing of all time takes place roughly from the first Sunday of April to the Last Sunday of October. Largest predictable yet unofficial gathering of people in, dare I say, the province if not the country. Tam Tams. Everyone in the area - hundreds to thousands of people - show up with their blankets and beer and pot and yoga mats and kids and dogs and guitars and snacks and so on and so forth...and we just chill together and make music and enjoy life all afternoon. It it non-negotiable. You have to go.

Ok, so this is a tapas restaurant...in the Spanish Social Club of Montreal. But on Thursday nights, it becomes so much more. On Thursday nights, you must…MUST…have a dinner reservation, in the main dining room, for around 8:00. Indicate that you want to be there for the flamenco show. Whatever else you eat, make sure to order the fried goat cheese balls with honey and caramelized onions. Seriously. Do not doubt me on this one. Just do it. 4848 boul. Saint Laurent. (514) 844-4227. Call now.

Arts & Culture

You'll certainly want to catch a glimpse of Montreal's Old Port while you're in town. If you like a good stroll, I would head down there - straight south. Cobblestone streets, old ornate architecture, horse-drawn carriages, chic restaurants. If you need a point of entry or a midway destination, I definitely recommend stopping at the Notre Dame Basilica. Constructed during the 1670s, while it still offers traditional religious services, you are also welcome to enter simply for a look around the breathtaking interior There are frequently fantastic events held there as well! I hear the wintertime organ competitions are other-worldly. A truly beautiful place, and it's on your way!
