Sightseeing

A 4.2km walkway which starts at the Whangarei Town Basin and circles the Whangarei inner harbour. This walk caters for all fitness and entertainment levels. Scooters and bicycles can be hired at the Town Basin, if desired. Reyburn House Gallery, which is located adjacent to the parking areas, and displays local and nationally recognised artist's work. Multiple artwork/sculptures are installed along the walk and many pieces symbolise the culture and history of the area. Also the walk includes several bridge crossing (including Te Matau a Pohe bridge).

The Waimahanga walkway is along a disused railway line, extending from the Onerahi foreshore. The track passes through mangroves, bridges over tributary crossings and ending at Waimahanga Road. From here there is a paved/concrete designated cycle/walking tract to the Town Basin. The track starts 2.4kms from Harbour on Beach.

Historical and ecological focal point. The island has ruins of a lime works which used the local limestone. It is also a scenic reserve with restoration plant and re-introduction of indigenous species such as Kiwis and geckos. This has been successful due to the eradication of exotic predators.
