Beaches and activities

Snorkeling and Scuba diving: The best snorkelling sites are located north of Sodwana Bay, where excellent visibility and well over 1 000 fish species are the main attraction. Turtle Tours: Our aim is to make the tourist and the general public aware of the plight of our endangered turtles and their struggle for survival. We also strive to give the tourist a “once in a lifetime experience”, while focusing on the importance of the preservation and conservation of our wildlife and the environment. We do beach drives in the evenings to see the loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest and hatch on our beaches and we also do game viewing excursions to the major “Big Five” game parks in the area.

This KwaZulu-Natal nature reserve offers sheltered beaches, rock pools and ledges surrounded by the wetlands and coastal forest of iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Cape Vidal is wonderful for observing marine life at low tide while snorkelling. The bay has a launch site for deep-sea fishing excursions (including spearfishing) and ski boats. Snorkelers can keep a look out for the remains of the ship called Dorothea which was lost in these waters in 1898 - the wreck has never been found. The winter months are when you can see Humpback Whales in the sea, as they migrate up the East coast of South Africa on their way to Mozambique to give birth, and in summer Leatherback and Loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Hippo Facts St Lucia, South Africa is situated in KwaZulu Natal and is also situated within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's very first world heritage site. The town is almost entirely surrounded by water on the west side the St Lucia Estuary the largest in Africa and on the east side the Indian Ocean. St Lucia and the surrounding area is home to a large variety of wildlife including an approximate number of 800 Hippos. These Hippos reside in the estuary by day and they may be viewed while out on a Hippo and Croc boat cruise. These tours run daily and if possible try to join the sunset trips as they are just incredible. These Hippos graze an incredible amount of grass each evening and thus some of the Hippos can be seen each evening grazing on the lawns in the town of St Lucia. What an incredible sight I assure you. Should you be overnighting At Heritage House then you are certainly in for a treat as they are seen quite regularly outside the property. It is estimated that each Hippo will graze up to 30 kilograms of grass each evening. The name Hippopotamus means river horse and is commonly referred to as a Hippo. The Hippo is also the third largest land mammal.
