Activity

There are kid (and big kids) things to do in the Forrest Park which is quite near (more or less across the lake). To get there go left at my gate keep right at first "T" junction cross Knockvicar bridge and about one KM on you will see on your left a gate house shaped like an old three-penny coin. Turn in opposite and follow the road to the park.

A nice short walk along the river starting at Knockvicar Post Office (sadly no longer a PO) and ending at "the Locks" and wier. The route is paved, no special footwear needed. Kids need to be supervised closely.

See how coal mining was carried out for centuries as described by former miners. Go via Keadew towards Mount Allen and turn off for Arigna village. Best to book in advance. Wear warm clothes and stout foot ware https://www.arignaminingexperience.ie/ IF at Arigna then it is well worth making your way along the mountain down into Ballyfarnon. The descent into Ballyfarnon gives a beautiful view over over three lakes.

Sightseeing

Keadue village is well worth a look being a former “Ireland’s Tidiest Town” and still maintained to that standard. Keadue can also be the start point on a very scenic journey via Arigna over the top of the Kilronan Mountain to the village of Ballyfarnon. Watch the road but do not miss the spectacular views over Lough Melvin, Lough Skein and Lough Arrow, all three of which are in view when descending the mountain. Continuing from Ballyfarnon to the crossroad at Kilmactranny and taking a right towards Highwood commences a new well worth it very scenic drive which passes by Lough Arrow to Corrigeenroe and back to the house. Shortly up this road the large house on the right now surrounded by farm machinery is a childhood home of the 1st President of Ireland Dr Douglas Hyde whose father was for a time pastor of the local church farther up the road.

During the Ice Age this beautiful peak was all that was visible of the entire surrounding area. FRINGED SANDWORT, a white-petalled member of the Pink family of wild flowers, grows on the north facing slopes of the peak today as it did during that time. This flower is found on a few high peaks in mainland Europe and in Greenland.
