Historic jail where Jesse James's brother Frank was jailed and treated like a celebrity until he was declared innocent at trial of all charges after twenty years as a bank robber. Another famous jailbird: William Quantrill.

Harry Truman's home from 1919 until his death in 1972 directly across the street from us was built by his wife Bess's grandfather between 1867 and 1885. It's free to visit.

First Baptist Church of Independence was first organized in the 1850s and met in people's homes until the first church was built at 500 W Truman in 1886. Our house was parsonage in the 1940s.

This museum stands on the Temple Lot, a property purchased by Joseph Smith in 1831 and declared the holy ground of the Mormon church. It has an exhibit showing life for the Mormon settlers in Independence of the 1830's.

Within walking distance of our house, this presidential library is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation as of beginning of 2020. It'll be even more amazing when it reopens, allowing you to experience the vision of the people's president.
This 31-room mansion was built in 1881 and described by the Kansas City Times as "the most princely home and most comfortable home in the entire West." It may be the best example of a Second-Empire style mansion in the US. Museum with reasonable admission fee.

Development of this property goes back to the 1820's, as it was located directly on the Santa Fe Trail. The artist George Caleb Bingham, famous for his print Order Number 11, was living at the estate during the civil war and had his studio in an older log structure. From 1879 to 1979 three generations of the Waggoner family, successful mill operators, called the estate their home and expanded it as their fortunes increased. Museum and event space.
