It is about 22 miles from our house, or a 30 minute drive, to the front entrance of Zion National Park. You can drive within the park except for the road into Zion Canyon, which is accessible via shuttle. The shuttle operates from the beginning of May until the end of November. From December through April you can drive your car in the canyon. You may also want to visit the Kolob Canyon area of the park which is northwest of La Verkin. Take I-15 north to exit 40 to get to Kolob Canyon.

Confluence Park is a beautiful place for a hike or bike ride. The trailhead is just a few blocks away from our home. From the house head west on 170 South and then turn right (north) on 560 West. Follow 560 West until it ends at Center Street. Turn left (west) on Center Street and follow the road to the trailhead. The trail takes you down to the Virgin River where there are trails, picnic areas and historical sites.

Confluence Park
Confluence Park is a beautiful place for a hike or bike ride. The trailhead is just a few blocks away from our home. From the house head west on 170 South and then turn right (north) on 560 West. Follow 560 West until it ends at Center Street. Turn left (west) on Center Street and follow the road to the trailhead. The trail takes you down to the Virgin River where there are trails, picnic areas and historical sites.
Boasting some of the warmest waters in the state and a mild winter climate, Quail Creek lures boaters and anglers year-round. Camp. Hike. Explore. Quail Creek reservoir was completed in 1985 to provide irrigation and culinary water to the St. George area. Most of the water in the reservoir does not come from Quail Creek but is diverted from the Virgin River and transported through a buried pipeline. Two dams form the reservoir. The main dam is an earth-fill embankment dam. The south dam is a roller compacted concrete dam, constructed to replace the original earth-fill dam that failed in the early hours of New Year’s Day 1989. The maximum depth of Quail Creek can reach 120 feet, so it is cold enough to sustain the stocked rainbow trout, bullhead catfish, and crappie. Largemouth bass, which is also stocked, and bluegill thrive in the warmer, upper layers of the reservoir.

Cedar City is north of La Verkin on I-15. It is much higher in elevation and so it is cooler than La Verkin, St. George and the area surrounding our house. Cedar City is home to the Shakespeare festival in August and September where you can catch some dramatic arts in an outdoor theater.

One is that it was derived from the Spanish for The Virgin--La Virgen. But there doesn't appear to be any Spanish influence in the area. It is also thought that La Verkin is derived from the native word for Beautiful Valley. The last theory comes from handwritten maps from early trappers. From early on the creek was known as Beaver Skin Creek. Some theorize that because of poor writing and spelling skills, it deteriorated to LeaverSkin to Lavinskind and finally to La Verkin.
