In 1673, according to tradition, the patron saint of the island, Agios Spyridon, saved Corfu from the plague that afflicted hundreds of families. On October 29 of the same year, the people of Corfu decided to hold a litany of the shrine of the Saint every year on the first Sunday of November, hence the name of the custom "First Sunday". The religious events start early on Sunday morning with the Divine Liturgy in the church of Agios Spyridon, while immediately after the procession of the holy shrine of Agios in the cantons of Corfu and in the central square Spianada, accompanied by the clergy

On the feast of Saint Spyridon on December 12, there is no litany of the procession as the Saint is the host in his church and welcomes all the faithful. In Corfu the events are three days in honor of its patron. Thousands of believers come to the island from all over the world and mainly from Russia, Ukraine, Serbia and Cyprus, in order to worship the holy incorruptible relic of Saint Spyridon, the miracles of which are known throughout the world.

Cathara (clean) Monday is a mobile holiday, which depends on the date of Easter.Specifically, it falls every year at the beginning of the 7th week, in 48 days before Orthodox Easter and obviously always on a Monday.This day is celebrated all over Greece, with various customs and is an official holiday. It is common all over Greece to eat lagana, taramas, halva and seafood. The main customs are the kite flying, but also the so-called Gaitanaki. In many restaurants and taverns of Corfu, inside and outside the city, you will find that your day and appetite "pull".
