Nightlife

You may have heard that Berlin is a city that never sleeps... But that's not to say you can't sleep as well as take part of the nightlife! Many Berliners will comfortably sleep in and head off to a club on Sunday morning, or even at lunchtime, and join the crowd leftover from the night before, dancing to the latest in techno, house and EDM. And if dance clubs aren't your thing, Berlin still has a lot to offer. We've listed a few special spots that should appeal to every taste and age group.

A very modern square with a lot to see. Among its sights are the Film Museum in the Sony Center (a building straight from the future), the Neue Nationalgalerie - where you can peruse modern art in a modern architectural icon by Mies van der Rohe -, as well as the Gemäldegalerie - a picture gallery home to famous paintings by the great old masters. Then there is still the Phillarmonie, and opposite to it, the Staatbibliothek (state library), both architectural masterpieces by local hero, Hans Scharoun. Do yourself a favor and go inside!

Why not get a 3-day museum pass and really enjoy all that Museumsinsel has to offer? If you are short on time, you can just walk around and enjoy all the beautiful buildings from outside. The reason why they call it an island is because the river Spree surrounds it. Its bridges and parks are impressive, as is the Berlin Cathedral just next door.

This is Berlin's Egyptian museum, as well a museum of both prehistory and early history. Displayed are not only artifacts but also testimonies of travelers and expeditions that allowed for the rediscovery of Ancient Egypt and lead to the phenomenon of 18th-century egyptomania that swept Europe. Most of the rooms are decorated in the style of Ancient Egyptian palaces and tombs, or with romantized scenes from its history painted in absolutely amazing frescos. Largely destroyed during the second world war, this 19th-century building has reopened not so many years ago, after a beautiful and intricate restoration process lead by David Chipperfield. Open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 and 18:00. On Thursdays it is open from 10:00 to 20:00.
