Food Scene

Located at 6 Vlaška ul., Zagreb, 10000 Known for Cafe or Coffee Shop, Peace & Quiet, Romance, Families, Budget Friendly, Touristy Why locals love it? It feels as if you are sitting in someone's vintage home or terrace. Best of all, the cakes taste truly wonderful. It's a popular coffee place, too. Why you should visit it Amelie is a little pastry shop on a perfect spot, near the very main square. It's terrace is in a shadowy spot alongside the old city walls of Kaptol, one of the oldest parts of the city, dominated by the cathedral spires. Romantic decoration blends with the tastes so wonderfully. Special tip Even if you're just passing by, enter to grab one of their macaroon-cookies. Some claim they can't get any better than that. One of the pioneers in home-made sweets' shops. There used to be onl few names in whole city know for its sweets, and then Amelie came first and made a new trend which was followed by many now, really good sweets shop. I like Amelie cause it has it's brand cake Amelie which I could taste anytime anywhere :)

Why locals love it? Ever since Mundoaka opened its doors, it's been hard to get a table, especially during the winter times when the terrace is closed. Their food is delicious and along with some classic meals, they change the menu frequently. Mundoaka brought something new to Zagreb - starting from the way they present the food to how it tastes. Why you should visit it If you'd like to have a nice meal with friends or your partner, celebrate a birthday or just stop by for lunch, Mundoaka is a perfect place. Their portions are huge, there's always something new to try and they make everything from scratch, using fresh and high quality ingredients. Special tip Reservation is a must, even for some random days and times!"Food with Heart and Soul" Petrinjska 2 Zagreb 10000 01 7888 777 Open Today 9:00AM - 1:00AM

Why locals love it? There are two restaurants of the same name. The other one is in the area of the Upper town Zagreb and is very popular among tourists. But this one is well-known among locals, and since it was opened first, it is considered "the original" Didov san. Why you should visit it Because it's good. The food is great, inspired by traditional Croatian cuisine from Dalmatinska Zagora region. Accordingly, interior design is inspired by traditional motifs. Special tip If it's too pricey for your budget, at least treat yourself with tasty "Ustipci with cheese" accompanied by a glass of house wine.

Why locals love it? It is situated in one of the most beautifull passagees, right few steps from the Main Square. Place simply attracts you with its simple, yet warm design. Only window tables for short stay are available at site, but no worries yumminess of all the flavors won't let you stay very long, it will take you only few minutes to finish your last bite. Why you should visit it This place is a mixture of a quick but very tasty bites in a hart of the city, on Ilica, simple food with so many new flavors, an experience you definitely won't regret. A kind of simple hot-dog that you usually have in mind is all that you won't find here. This place is special. Special tip No favorites, all of my favorites

Why locals love it? This place is simply so original, so unique and equipped with so many old and crazy interesting pieces that it would be a real pity if you would missed it. Off the beaten track, in a courtyard of, at first glance just, an ordinary building in Vlaška ulica. The owner has its antiques shop for decades and decided to open small coffee place. Why you should visit it Place will send you back in time around 1920s and make you feel how Zagreb lived around that time. You will drink coffee made from the original coffee machine owned by Tito itself on his yacht. Lamp above your head will either be old cylinder hat of gramophone tube. Old fashioned spitting pot will also be close by, just in case. Special tip Terrace furniture is original one used by luxury hotel Esplanade in early 20s. Place is simply damn good opportunity to touch history, even sit on it.

Why locals love it? Zagreb is not a metropolitan city like other much bigger European cities but we sure welcome any new cuisine, so is Thai - Umami grill where genuine Thai personnel is preparing food, where space is small but always packed and food is always yummy. The steady menu list is concise fulfilled with different daily specialties - specially soup. Why you should visit it When in Zagreb, Croatia in general, I always recommend to try local food, but hey I know personally when away on a trip, one can miss his/her favorite food, most certainly that being Thai. For genuine taste and really affordable prices, Umami grill is more than reasonable choice. Special tip Pad Thai is superb, and any soup you choose is excellent choice, just be careful of the very hot ones! :)

Why locals love it? It seems incredible that something so typical for Zagreb, so local - something like "strukli" - didn't have a tasting zone up until recently. But recently it all changed with a brand new place that serves nothing but strukli. Why you should visit it You can't leave the city without a taste of "strukli". Aren't you curious what is it? I'm not explaining, google it if you don't like surprises... but you should just go and try it for yourself. With cca 5 EUR for a nice meal, you won't regret it. Honestly, I've never heard of anyone who doesn't like strukli. Special tip They serve very creative types of strukli. But since you don't really have a chance to try strukli that often, start with the traditional version. Really yummy locally known and hand-made pastry. must try.

Why locals love it? Kava Tava has recently grown into a trendy little place. It's a charming stand, with no tables inside, only outdoor tables, offering a pretty good choice of drinks, delicious fast food treats, and everything you need for a quick get together with your friends. Why you should visit it If you find yourself in this part of the city, it's a great place to take a break. It's also a rare street bar to become such a well known place around here. I guess you should check it out and feel its atmosphere for yourself to find out why. It's a bit more expensive than average bars. Special tip Try their special pancakes called Cinkice or a yummy sandwich called Toastic.

Why locals love it? Enjoying your coffee surrounded by first class art... this cafe carries a touch of exclusiveness thanks to the interesting art collection on display all over the place. Than this is a perfect place to get literally immersed in local art and history without even noticing it. Works of Croatian artists surrounded by the smell of coffee in the medieval part of the city... pretty inviting, isn't it? Why locals love it? Alcatraz is a small, but really popular bar. The number of its visitors often exceeds the size of the place. It's a crowded hangout in the evening and a spot to get inexpensive coffee during the day. All sorts of rock memorabilia and accompanying music are bringing a lot of people in, especially on weekends. Why you should visit it The bar is perfectly positioned, it's only 5 minutes away from the Zagreb central square, yet the prices are moderate, even lower than average prices in the city center. It's open till 2 AM each day. Special tip Even when it seems that the place is so crowded that it's hopeless, there's a chance to find a table upstairs. Getting Around

Why locals love it? The first, the oldest, the safest, the shortest......these four words can pretty much describe two blue cabins of Zagreb funicular. It was the first mean of public transportation in Zagreb, the oldest one that is still in use, never had an accident involving human victims and it's railways are only 66 m long. Why you should visit it Zagreb funicular is an operating museum exhibit. It's more than 120-year-old witness of modern Zagreb development. It had initially been steam-operated, and even after it switched to electric power, the restoration was performed with care so it's a genuine remain of late 19th century Zagreb. It's also one of the symbols of the city. Special tip The ride costs only 5 HRK (less then 1 EUR) and it departs each 10 minutes. It operates even on holidays. Locals call it Uspinjaca(oos-pee-nyah-chuh).

Why locals love it? Britanski trg (British Square), the so-called Britanac, has always been a well-known spot, some even call it the most Zagreb-like square, full of memories and stories of growing up in this city. The design of this square has never been quite finished, and that's probably why it feels so authentic. Why you should visit it This is the home of the open-air market with the longest tradition around, almost a century long. Enjoy the lively market in the morning, come here for a drink in some of the nearby cafes in the evening, check out what the regional art-scene has to offer in nearby galleries. It's real Zagreb, just 10 minutes walking distance from the main square. Special tip Don't miss the open-air antique fair on Sundays to browse through precious time-frozen items.

The Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is a Roman Catholic institution and not only the tallest building in Croatia, but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps. Why locals love it? The cathedral is perceived as a must-see place. No local will ever let you leave the city if she or he hasn't showed you the cathedral. Everyone is proud of this monument, and it really is a piece of art that shares many tales of old. Why you should visit it It tells a lot of stories from the city's past. The first story goes to 11th century, the times when this city was founded. One of those stories is one about the 1880 earthquake that destroyed Zagreb. That's when the cathedral got its current appearance. Just entering the cathedral, you will hear soft whispers from the past. Special tip Walk around the cathedral, too. There's a sense that you shouldn't do that, but you can freely enter the small iron gate next to the church.

The Church of St. Mark is the parish church of old Zagreb, Croatia, located in St. Mark's Square. Monumental, medieval-style, Serbian Orthodox church constructed from 1931-1940. Why locals love it? This square has been the center of medieval Zagreb. Today, it's the center of Croatian government and parliament. It's picturesque, cute, most of the people agree it's special and beautiful, bursting with history and real-life-stories. It has been a witness of so many changes, including being somewhat abandoned by the city life. Why you should visit it St Mark's church with its colored rooftop in the middle of the square has become the most recognizable sight of Zagreb. You will probably want to see it when you're visiting Zagreb. Though it's really one of the first things listed in each and every travel guide, it has managed to keep its charm. As soon as it loses it, we're removing this review;) Special tip St Mark's church is usually closed. Why locals love it? The house Kallina is one of the most unusual architectural achievements of Zagreb. It is a residential palace completely covered in ceramic tiles. The house was constructed at the beginning of the XXth century by a rich owner of ceramic tiles factory. He used his own house as a promotional show-off for his company. Why you should visit it The building was designed by famous Zagreb architect Vjekoslav Bastl and it's one of the most extraordinary examples of local art-nouveau architecture. Amazing colored tiles cover the entire building, some of them even showing secessionist floral motifs. Special tip If you take a close look, you'll notice the tiles representing bats around first-floor windows. And beware... there are rumors the house is haunted!

Amazing colored tiles cover the entire building, some of them even showing secessionist floral motifs. Special tip If you take a close look, you'll notice the tiles representing bats around first-floor windows. And beware... there are rumors the house is haunted!

Parks & Nature

Ribnjak is a very popular park for it contains a children playground, it's a perfect place to take your dog out, and there's also a popular night-club and a cultural center offering a wide range of activities inside the park. Why you should visit it Impressive sight of medieval cathedral walls and the cathedral itself rising above the park are reminders of the city's long history. Winding paths and the variety of centennial trees make you sense the nature even here, in the center of the city. Special tip It's hard to imagine that bishops used to have fishponds on this spot. After all, that's what its name stands for. Ribnjak means fishpond.

Why locals love it? A walk through this serene oasis in the very city center, makes a perfect break from the busy everyday life. 120 years old trees are true witnesses of this city's history and development. Just sitting on a bench beside the windy pathways and reading a chapter or two of your favorite book, takes you far away from the stressful day at work. Why you should visit it Not only is this a botanical research center, it is also a wonderful example of park architecture, with both asymmetrical landscape and geometrical flower beds. It is also a true open-air museum of plants with collections of species, such as Mediterranean, tropical, even carnivorous plants. And best of all - there is no entrance fee! Special tip The 19th century pavilion serves as information center and exhibition area. You can see and sometimes even purchase Croatian endemic plants there. The restored exhibition pavilion was open in a ribbon-cutting ceremony during the University Garden party in September 2007. Find out more about the restoration process and our plans for this beautiful building. The 19-century artist is considered to be one of the greatest of Croatian watercolourists. The best and most famous of her works were painted by the ponds in our Garden. Botanical Garden Trg Marka Marulića 9A, 10000, Zagreb Working hrs: Mon/Tue 9-14.30, Wed-Sun 9-17

King of Zagreb parks. Why locals love it? Locals often spend their free time enjoying the walks down the pathways of the late 18th century park Maksimir. It's a great place for recreational activities, such as jogging and cycling. In spring and summertime, there are all sorts of events going on inside the park. Why you should visit it Spice up your stay in Zagreb by visiting huge historical park Maksimir, enjoying the combination of beautiful park architecture and pure nature. If you're a true a nature lover, you'll be thrilled to know that 5 lakes and centennial oak-forest of Maksimir make a perfect bird-watching location. Special tip Inside the park, you'll find the famous Zagreb city ZOO. My personal favorite stop inside the park is a little cafe called the Swiss House. My favorite park in the city, a must see when you're in town.

Arts & Culture

Why locals love it? The city museum is a must for everyone living in Zagreb because it brings the city's history closer to its residents. It often hosts very interesting exhibitions on particular subjects, thus allowing some lesser known information to reach the public. Unfortunately, temporary exhibitions are mostly in Croatian only. Why you should visit it The Zagreb City Museum gives an interesting overview of the city's past. It's a great starting point to learn about Zagreb and to actually understand its development throughout the ages. The museum building is a historical site itself - a former convent of the Poor Clares nuns. It exhibits an in situ preserved archeological site. Special tip The museum displays some interesting collections by private donators, which can easily be missed if you don't pay attention to the small sign-plates.

Hilariously fun and entertaining museum. Why locals love it? Maybe the catch is in the word museum, cause I wouldn/t call it a museum, it is simply fun and entertaining, very interactive place. But then again you can learn really fun facts about physics so it not just a game house, so let's stick to the word museum and let/s add, a really fun museum. Why you should visit it Just like another fun museum in Zagreb called "Museum of broken hearts" this museum is really entertaining, fun, different and above all very interactive. Actually you will feel like you are part of the museum, you yourself, cause for the museum to be fun and discovered, you will have to act in it, be an actor :) Special tip I don't want to spoil the fun, but mirror room, gravity room etc...

Why locals love it? Nikola Tesla was born in a small Croatian village called Smiljan. He has always been considered one of the most important persons of Croatian origin.. That's why learning about him, inside this demonstration lab, which is a part of Technical Museum, is a must for every Zagreber. Why you should visit it These days, the world is reviving Tesla's visions and inventions. But Tesla has been living inside the Zagreb Technical Museum for half-a-century now. That seems like a pretty reliable place to get to know this genius and his extraordinary inventions, doesn't it? Special tip This is just a small part of the museum. Why not visit other departments, too, especially the one dedicated to other famous Croatian scientists?
