Durham Castle is University College and so you can only visit on an organised tour. They are usually run by one of the students and very good and not very expensive. Visit the World Heritage Visitor Centre in Owengate, near the Castle for a ticket

Durham Castle has enjoyed a long history of continuous use, and is now home to students of University College, Durham.
