Everything Else

The garden was laid out with Cascade, Lime Avenue, and other features, to the design of Sir Joseph Paxton of Crystal Palace fame. It was to be part of Britannia Park, a Victorian extravaganza with Grand Hotel, conservatories and station on the main railway line. But due to funding problems, the whole scheme was abandoned and the site reverted to pasture and woodland.

You can’t help but be taken aback by the vast luxurious rooms, Gothic stairways and fine art on display. Hear tales of star-crossed lovers, sugar and slate fortunes and delve ‘below stairs’ into the Victorian kitchens.

Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association and contains his exquisite romantic mural and the largest exhibition of his works. A military museum contains relics from the First Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, an italianate-style summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour. A woodland walk gives access to a delightful spring and early summer rhododendron garden. From the house and grounds, the views across the Menai Strait to the mountains of Snowdonia are simply stunning.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Pontio Building is light, bright and airy. It is a veritable Tardis! There is a cinema, – a beautiful cinema – which will will be open every evening with 2 viewings at 5.30 pm and 8.15 pm. There is a theatre – a very different theatre which can be changed round in a few hours to hold a standing gig or a play – with many possible layouts. The ethos of Pontio is literally the bridge – a bridge between town and gown – a bridge between citizens and students – this is to be a shared space. There are rooms where science and technology meet with arts and culture. Outside Pontio work is being done to install the public art such as Y Caban, a structure by the renowned Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout and is meant to be a modern day interpretation of the quarrymen’s cabin. Public art is meant to be controversial but whilst I think the concept was inspirational, in my opinion I find the reality to be a rubber green rubber duck! You will see it as you go past Pontio – what do you think? However, I do like the idea of the light meadow which has yet to be installed.
