Delphi (132 km) Delphi was in de klassieke oudheid een der beroemdste cultusplaatsen van de god Apollon en het meest bezochte en gerespecteerde orakel van de gehele oud¬heid. Later werd hier ook de god Dionysos vereerd. Vanaf 590 v.Chr. werden te Delphi de Pythische Spelen gehouden, dat waren wedstrijden in muziek, dichtkunst en sport. Delphi beleefde een late bloei in de Romeinse keizertijd, vooral door de belangstelling van verscheidene keizers waaronder vooral Hadianus. In 392 na Chr. werd het orakel gesloten door de christelijke keizer Theododius I, die kort tevoren het christendom tot staatsgodsdienst verheven had. Wanneer je naar Delphi gaat, vertrek dan zeker in de zomer op tijd. Het is ongeveer twee uur rijden. Op de terugweg stop je in Glifada, neem het veerbootje voor één euro p.p. en geniet van een heerlijke vismaaltijd op het pittoreske eilandje Trizonia.

Delphi is famous as the ancient sanctuary that grew rich as the seat of the oracle that was consulted on important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. Moreover, it was considered as the navel (or center) of the world by the Greeks as represented by the Omphalos. It occupies an impressive site on the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus overlooking the coastal plain to the south and the valley of Phocis. It is now an extensive archaeological site and the modern town is nearby. It is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in having had a phenomenal influence in the Ancient world, as evidenced by the rich monuments built there by most of the important ancient Greek city-states, demonstrating their fundamental Hellenic unity.
