Breathtaking walk by the river Gelt and up into beautiful towering pine woodland. Approximately 2 mile walk. 5 minute drive from cottages or walkable on country roads and through fields.

Two miles South of Brampton and a 10 minute drive from Bidston, there is a great woodland area steeped in history. Visit Cumbria credit the carved banks along the river to Roman quarrying either to build or repair Hadrian’s wall. Either way, Gelt woods is a beautiful place with lots of options. From the small car park at the bottom of the woods (CA8 1SZ) there are a number of routes, all easily found online or by following your nose. We opted for a shorter explore of the woods and return to the car but there is a 4.5 mile circular route or a 3 mile each way amble along the river towards Brampton and back. A lovely place to be, either for shelter from sun or rain, a forest run or simply for the spectacular river and landscape.

Talkin Tarn and the Gelt Walk (Walk 26 'Walking in Cumbria's Eden Valley' Cicerone Guide by Vivienne Crow), OS Explorer map 315, is a 7 3/4 mile walk and a total ascent 1,142 feet. It commences at Talkin Tarn and takes a very pretty route through Gelt Woods to the hamlet of Greenwell before returning to Talkin Tarn. It can be shortened at several points as desired and according to the weather. The Blacksmith's Arms at Talkin Village serves food and drinks.
