Eind 14e eeuw, toen de Oude Kerk te klein werd, werd de Nieuwe Kerk gebouwd. De gotische kerk, gebouwd naar het voorbeeld van de kathedraal van Amiens, was gewijd aan Onze Lieve Vrouwe en de Heilige Catharina. De naam is echter altijd Nieuwe kerk gebleven ter onderscheid van de oude Kerk. De meest bezochte kerk van Nederland werd in het voorjaar van 1410 in gebruik genomen. In 1578, toen het katholicisme verboden werd, werd de rijke decoratie vervangen door een protestants interieur: de standbeelden en altaarstukken werden verwijderd of vernietigd en de muren werden wit geverfd. De laatste 30 jaar is de kerk een bloeiend cultureel centrum en is ze beroemd vanwege haar spraakmakende tentoonstellingen. De kerk staat ook bekend als de plaats waar de kroning van het staatshoofd en de nationale herdenking op 4 mei plaatsvinden. In 1980 werd prinses Beatrix geïnaugureerd in de Nieuwe Kerk. In 2002 werd er het huwelijk voltrokken tussen koning Willem Alexander en koningin Máxima Zorreguieta.
