About l’Arc de Triomphe

Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte as a tribute to French military victory, the Arc de Triomphe stands at Place Charles de Gaulle in Paris. Construction began in 1806 and was completed in 1836. In 1921, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added beneath its vault as a symbol of national mourning and remembrance.

Things to know before visiting l’Arc de Triomphe

Entry and dress code

  • Ticket prices vary depending on the season and day of your visit.
  • The last entry is 45 minutes before the official closing time.
  • Admission is free for visitors under 18 and EU nationals aged 18 to 25

What to bring

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, as reaching the top requires climbing steps.
  • Bring a light jacket, as the stone interior stays cool even in summer.
  • Leave large bags behind. The maximum bag size allowed inside is 40 x 40 x 20 cm.

  • Use the underground pedestrian tunnel to reach the monument.
  • Wheelchairs are available to borrow free of charge with a valid identity document.
  • Strollers must be left with the officers at the entrance.
